Make garmin express use a map downloaded with map updater

I downloaded new maps ( City Navigator Europe 2016.1) to my computer with map updater, and then installed a subset of the larger map onto my device. I now want to change the map that is installed on my device, to a different map(due to space issues). I cannot find a way to perform the change using map install / map source. I tried to do it with garmin express, but it attempts to download (from garmin) the full map again. Can i point express to use the already downloaded map ?
  • If the map is downloaded to your PC for MapSource to use what issues are you having transferring it?

You can't point Express at the downloaded map but if the relevant files are still in your PC it won't download them again.

The GarminMapUpdater and Garmin Express applications download the mapping files to different locations on the computer. If you previously installed the maps using the GarminMapUpdater and are trying to change regions using Garmin Express, then the mapping files will be downloaded again.

MapSource and MapInstall both overwrite the gmapsupp.img file that is sent to the device each time the application is run. So all that needs to be done is to select the maps you want to send to the device in either application and then send them. Be sure to select each mapping tile that you want on the device. Since the file is not appended to but overwritten, the previously sent maps will be removed and replaced with the new selection.

The recommended way to update the maps is to use Garmin Express. If you need to install the maps to the computer, you can do so by viewing the details of the map update that is available and selecting the option to install the maps to the device and the computer. This way, if your device does not support the SD card option and you have to select a smaller region, you then use MapInstall or MapSource to send the remaining mapping to an SD card. Once the remaining maps are on the SD card, you should not have to re-load maps until the next update is performed. Our FAQ on this

What do I do if my device doesn't support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update?

Thanks to your assistance I've solved this. My nuvi was low on space so with MapSource i could not overwrite the installed map. MapSource seemed to just want to append to the existing content on the nuvi. (maybe i need to update to a newer mapsource version?)

Express seems to allude to being able to overwrite (remove and install in one function) the existing map. This is why i wanted to configure express to use the map downloaded to my computer previously by MapUpdater. In the end i manually removed the gmapprom1.img from the nuvi, which freed up some space, and then used mapsource to install the different map. Everything seems ok now !

Does anyone know why mapupdater and express download maps to different locations?
    Thanks again.
