Second users in Garmin Express

Hi,

My wife often borrows my Edge 800 but when it is connected through Garmin Express it adds the ride to my account. How can I redirect the ride to her account or is there a way to get Express to ask which account we want it sent to?
  • As far as I know, there isn't an easy way to do what you would like to do. What you can do though is to manually import the activity file on the Edge to your account. You may have to use Connect Classic to do the import as I have found Modern usually doesn't work as reliably as I would like.
  • Thanks Phil,

Yes, you are right, but as soon as I connect the Edge 800 to the laptop it updates my Connect account (which is synced to Strava and RidewithGPS too) and, if it gets successfully loaded to my wife's account I then have to delete the activity from my three website accounts.

Can I disable Express while I am manually loading her activities and then switch it back on for mine or better still, have it ask me which account to update?

This is more of a Garmin Connect/device issue. Garmin Express only links one Garmin Connect account per device. You would probably receive more information from the users on the actual Garmin Connect or Edge 800 forums:

  • Thanks Lisa.

The problem lies with Express. When I used the Communicator Plug-in all was well but we have now lost the ability to decide which account to update. We share the Edge 800 but perhaps this is unusual.

I will ask the 800 forum if anyone has a work-around.

Garmin Express is working as designed. Just as the device does not have the capability to setup a second user profile, Garmin Express does not send activities from a single device to multiple Garmin Connect accounts. From your post, it appeared that you always used the manual upload provided with Classic Connect and Communicator Plugin to upload your activities separately. This can still be done by using the manual import in Modern Connect.

How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?

  • Lisa, so your telling me Garmin did not think ahead enough in the design of Garmin Express to consider the fact 2 or even more family members might buy a Garmin device and need to use one computer because they might not have another? It appears Garmin Express only allows one instance per "Windows" or Mac machine. In our family, my wife, my daughter, my son all have garmins. We have 4 linux laptops, and one windows machine. That really sucks considering we spend a hell of a lot of money.

  • I don't recall the situation 5 years ago (Lisa's post date), but I'm currently using Garmin express in this manner. One Windows computer, one installation of Garmin Express with multiple user accounts associated with multiple Garmin devices.

  • It will work with multiple devices but not one device. There is a way to share one device using Express but it involves a few extra steps. What you can do is to set up an Express account to save all activities as a staging account. Then set up separate express accounts for each person and export from the staging account to the individual account.

Of course things like steps, sleep, intensity minutes, etc. would be of little value.

  • Hello. Can you please share your idea how do you achieve this? Quote:"ne Windows computer, one installation of Garmin Express with multiple user accounts associated with multiple Garmin devices".

    Thank you in advance,

    Igor

  • When you add a device to Garmin Express you can decide which user account to associate it with. A user account associated with a device can be changed later as well. I have one windows computer, one instance of Garmin Express, and multiple garmin devices added to Garmin Express, each one associated to a separate user account. While it is indeed not possible to associate ONE device with SEVERAL users, I do not see any issues with handling multiple users in Garmin Express, as long as you don't want to share a single device between multiple users.
