I have had this device for a few years. I have never needed to connect to Garmin except to register. I am going out of town and wanted to make sure I had current map updates. The site does not recognize my device. I tried both explorer and google and deleted and reinstalled the Garmin Express. I tried installing the communicator plug in on explore and still nothing. The computer recogonizes it as a Garmin nuvi and I have tried 3 different usb connectors and they all end with the same results. Anyone have any suggestions. I did email support, bit I was hoping there was someone out there that found the cure. I am running Windows 7 pro updated and media player is also updated
Typically when this happens on a mass-storage device like the nuvi 1390T, it is due to insufficient space on the internal memory of the device. If there is no available space, the device cannot properly create the GarminDevice.xml file which Garmin applications use to detect the device. Try the troubleshooting in our FAQ:
Why is my Garmin mass storage or MTP device not communicating with Garmin Windows applications?

Since you know the computer detects the device, you can skip that part of the troubleshooting.
If the device is still not detected, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.
I just checked the link and it is working. If you are receiving the JSP Class error, it is due to corrupted cached data. You can clear your cache or Google the FAQ title:
Why is my Garmin mass storage or MTP device not communicating with Garmin Windows applications?
The nuvi 1390LMT stores other data besides what can be loaded to it, favorite locations, trip log, etc. It is quite common for these devices to max out all the space so that when looking at the properties, it says 0 Bytes available.
It is working now! Thank you! I don't know which fix worked, disconnecting other USB ports, removing the XML, or deleting some languages. But I took out all favorites, all routes, most of the languages and it still is 93% full. I will see if it continues to update the maps. It says I should get a card for more memory- what kind and how?
You will need a micro SD card to insert into the slot on the left hand side of the device. I recommend 8 GB since 4GB cards are had to come buy. However you can use up to a 32GB but I don't foresee you needing anything larger than 8 GB.
What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?
The micro SD card can be purchased at any store that sells electronics. I recommend getting one that has an adapter for it in case you would ever need to insert the micro card into a full size card reader slot, like one built into computers, for troubleshooting purposes.
I got the SD micro SDHC at 8 GB with an adapter. Put it in the computer drive like the garmin express said to do. It did not find it asked for drive- gave it , said ok update needs to be done...does update says you are updated- go to switch maps so I can have complete map and it says yo9u don't have enough room, add SD card or pick category of map all over again? Now what? Am I supposed to put the SD card in the GPS not the computer?
