Express suddenly doesn't recognize USB drivers for Forerunner 305

As of last week, I upgraded my OS to Windows 10. On Windows website, they list that Garmin Express v3 is fully compatible, and as late as yesterday morning, I was able to connect my Forerunner 305 to computer and have express sync the data just fine. I have literally changed nothing on my system since yesterday. But this morning after my run, I plug in my 305 like I always do, and now suddenly Windows pops up a notification saying that it cannot recognize the USB device. A quick look in Device Manager shows that the USB device is popping up as unsupported. I tried manually pointing DM to the Garmin drivers located in the Program Files folder, but DM is convinced that the best driver is "installed" and refuses to do anything about it.

Help! I don't know what to do now. No matter what I try, I can no longer get Express to upload the data off my unit.

This is typically a hardware issue, cable, port, device, etc. But for some reason, Windows may not be assigning the newest USB device driver. Garmin did release a updated version on 4/15/2015, version 2.3.1.1. Try the troubleshooting in our FAQ:

How do I resolve the "USB Device Not Recognized" error when connecting my Forerunner 205 or 305 to my computer?

If you are still experiencing difficulties after trying the drivers, port, cable, and another computer, it may be that the device is malfunctioning. I have connected a Forerunner 305 successfully to multiple Win 10 computers here with no issues.

You may also want to try cleaning the contacts and the cradle and the device: How do I clean the contacts for my rechargeable wrist-worn device?

Contact Product Support by phone if you continue to have connectivity issues.

  • I had that a couple of weeks ago on win 7. A reboot of my computer fixed it.
