Garmin express keeps giving an error after I start installing maps to my Nuvi (after it says this will take over an hour.

Any suggestions?
  • What error? Which nuvi? Which map?

    Same problem.

What error? Which nuvi? Which map?

I have the same problems with multipe Nuvi's. I am trying to update from a Windows 7 machine. Windows 7 SP1 64 - bit.

The newest one is the Nuvi 2598 LMTHD. It currently has 2014.10 map. All firmware was updated via Garmin Express, but the map updates have failed. I currently have Garmin Express 4.1.5.0 and trying to update to the latest map 2016.10 (5.29GB).

The Nuvi 2598 LMTHD has 2.71 GB free. I initially installed a Sandisk 32GB MicroSDHC card which didn't work. I purchased a Sandisk 16GB MicroSDHC which also didn't work. Finally I purchased a Sandisk 8GB MicroSDHC which also didn't work. Each of these cards were recognized in Windows Explorer after clicking on the Garmin Nuvi device and each memory card was displayed. i was able to write a file to each card while it was plugged into the Nuvi 2598 LMTHD. None of the cards were dispalyed in Garmin Express 4.1.5.0.

I think I have included every piece of needed info. Does anyone have any info? Thanks.
  • Again you say it fails. At what point? With what error message if any?

I'm trying to update the maps on my brand new nüvi 2597 in Windows 10 (see pic), Garmin Express says it's gonna take more than an hour, it gets to "building" maps and then just throws the message "there was an error installing the update"

A friend of mine claims he managed to update his nüvi using an older version of Garmin Express from 2014, can old versions of express be downloaded from garmin?

  • Do you have the required amount of hard disk space?

    See this FAQ https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={1390bcf0-06fe-11e4-eaba-000000000000}

I would think so, my system drive where Garmin Express is installed has 40 gigs free, my nüvi has a 16GB SD-card installed (tried without it and with a 8GB of another brand)
  • From what you say it seems the download has completed to your PC but there is an issue between your PC and the device, since you seem to have the requisite free space.

One thing you might try which sometimes succeeds in cases like this is to set your nuvi to mass storage rather than mtp mode.

    To do so:

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
(may see Configuration and Settings, if so select it)
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
    7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 and 2 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen. Now go from step 3.

Note the reason mtp mode was introduced was in part to help prevent folks from bricking their nuvis by meddling or even formatting their nuvi drive in error. Once in mass storage mode be careful!
