Problem connecting to the Garmin servers

I have two devices: Edge 500 and Forerunner 220

I was having problems with my Edge 500, so I deleted it from Garmin Express to try to resolve it. When I try to add it back in (Add a Device), it prompts me to Sign In, and when I do, it tells me that "There was a problem connecting to the Garmin servers. We're unable to sign you in because our servers are unavailable at this time." However, my 220 syncs no problem. It simply won't allow me to add my 500. And I know that the servers are available, because if I purposefully put in the WRONG password, it tells me "Invalid sign in. (Passwords are case sensitive.). So it clearly hits the authentication portion of the process. I only get the error when I use the correct password. I have tried signing in with both my Email and my username, but get the same results. I have been having this issue for weeks now.

For the last several weeks, I just have to manually import my rides using the Garmin Connect website by manually importing the file, which works just fine. It would be nice to just have Express do it for me though.

Typically, this occurs when the GarminDevice.xml file on the Edge 500 becomes corrupted and contains incorrect data. You can try deleting that file from the device, disconnecting it from the computer, and allow the device to boot up fully to the main screen. Then reconnect the device to the computer and try adding it to Garmin Express again. If the server error is still given, the device will need to be master reset. The reset may need to be done twice before a valid file is created.

If data needs to be uploaded before the reset, it will need to be done manually.

If you still receive the error after the reset, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

  • it worked

Deleting the file did not work. However, the Master reset fixed it. I just had to reset it once.

    thanks!
