Garmin Touring/Garmin Express map update loop

Hi
I'm having a nightmare with my Garmin Touring/Garmin Express.

Every time I connected the device in the last few days (since buying it a week ago) Garmin Express proposed me to update the map.

I don't know how often the maps are updated but I guess not every day.

I searched the forum and found a similar problem in this thread.
I also found (in this thread) that the problem was apparently solved with v. 4.1.4.0 (I then had v. 4.1.3.0).

So I was confident that after updating Express to the most recent version (now 4.1.5.0) the problem would be gone.
But after connecting Express proposed again a new map update.

I accepted thinking that it could be a real update.

In fact The device now show that the Routable Cycle Map of Europe installed is v. 2015.11 (before it was v. 2015.10).

So, problem solved?
No! It doesn't seem so because now, upon connecting again, Express proposes me once again a new map update and in the details I see that it's version 2015.10 (so an older version than the one I have on my device).

I can't understand... Am I missing something?

I recommend deleting the device from Garmin Express and Connect (How do I delete a fitness device from Garmin Express?), reboot the computer and add the device back.

Does Garmin Express still prompt for the map update? If so, we will need to gather more information to troubleshoot this issue and it would be best to contact Product Support by phone.

  • map updating request every time

    Thanks Lisa for your reply

I followed your instructions to the letter: deleted the device from Garmin Express and Connect, rebooted the computer and added the device back.

When disconnected, in my device (Edge Touring) in Settings - System - Trip Pages - Map - Map Information I could see that the Garmin Cycle Map EU 2015.11 was loaded and enabled.

But when i reconnected the Touring to the PC, once again Garmin Express proposed me an update to the map (in the details I see that the update is v. 2015.10).

I accepted, waited for the update (about 1 hour) disconnected the device, reconnected the device and, after that, again Express proposed me a new map update.

So I think there's definitely something wrong in the map updating process.

That's not a much serious problem: if I know there's a problem I can just ignore the map update message (updating takes more than 1 hour). But, in so doing, I won't update the map when the proposed update is a real one.

I wonder if it's just me to have this problem or if it is more general.
  • I have the identical problem. But the 2015 maps are installed (just version 2015.11 rather than the 2015.10 that Garmin Express wants to take it back to). I think I will just leave it as is but not update the maps until the 2016 ones come out!

    Yep same issue her

Yep same issue here...new Edge 1000. new set-up, prompts for map update (2015.10) on EVERY connection to Express, I installed it twice, until I realised it was the same darn update every time! :-(
  • I have emailed customer support. They recommended removing my garmin from Garmin connect, uninstalling garmin express, hard reset of device, reinstall latest version of garmin express, reconnect device.

The same issue remains. I have 2015.11 maps on my device and garmin express wants to take me back to 2015 .10 (the maps are on the SD card it comes with not the device itself although I had t he SD card inserted). In fact it is now asking me to install the same (older map) twice! on the update screen.

I was also asked to fill in a customer feedback survey. Sadly, the link for that survey was also broken.

I am going to give up. The maps work and I'll just ignore all updates from garmin express for a while. maybe after there is a new version of garmin express it might "catch up" with the maps and I will try again
  • This is a know issue with some Edge Touring devices. If you have updated the maps please disregard the prompt from Express to reinstall or install a previous version. The issue should be resolved in a future update to Express.

I am sorry for the confusion.

I have the same problem with the map update loop and it is not possible to install Strava segments on the device. When I look into my Install Queue/view detail and click on install other items (strava segments) the syncing runs into an error (There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect) .

When it is a known issue can I use the warranty and return the device (Edge 1000).

    Thanks and cheers,

I am sorry that you are having trouble syncing your segments but this is not the known issue that we are discussing here. If you are getting syncing errors, I would recommend following the instructions here:
What should I do if I am unable to sync my mass storage fitness device using Garmin Express?

If you are still having trouble, please contact Product Support by phone.

    Hello Jason,
I have no syncing errors. I have the same problem discussed here. Everytime I connect the Edge1000 to the PC Garmin Express will do a complete Map Update. The map update will proceed with success if I update. But each time I connect the device I should make the update.
No the problem gets deeper. If there are e.g. Segments to install on the device the install queue is getting bigger. At 1st position it is the map update and 2nd the segments. If I disregard the map update and try to install the segments it doesn't work and run in to the named error.
So from my perspective syncing from a technical point is working but due to the loop of the map update it is not possible to install other things.

    What do you think?

    Cheers!
  • I have exact the same problem with my Edge 1000. On the device there's 2015.11 but Express wants to revert to 2015.10.
I have Express installed at Work and upgraded to 2015.11 but at Home it wants do downgrade to 2015.10.
