New purchased map not showing in Garmin Express

I bought a Nuvi 2699 in Europe, with life time maps and life time digital traffic. So far all is good. Mid June I bought the North American maps, life time. I guess downloaded (and installed?) these on an extra SD card using the browser account managment interface (nothing was said about having to use Garming Express). The maps worked fine.

BUT
a) the North American maps do not show up in the list of installed maps when using Garming Express and,
b) I can not load the map on to my PC for use with BaseCamp when my device is not attached. Only the European maps are on my PC so far.

Can someone explain how I can manage and use my NA maps the same way I manage my European maps?

Thanks,
Grant

The mapping you purchased is a Downloadable Content mapping. It can only be downloaded to a device or SD card to be used in a device. When working with BaseCamp, the device or SD card must be connected to the computer. Downloadable Content mapping is not installed to the computer. Downloadable Content mapping is also not able to be updated. If a newer version is needed, it must be purchased again for the full price. Our FAQ on the types of mapping format available cover this information.

Should I purchase mapping for my GPS on a disc, pre-programmed datacard, or as downloadable content?

If you want to use the maps on your computer without your device connected, you will need to purchase a DVD. Once the full version DVD mapping is unlocked to your device, you can purchase map updates at reduced costs or purchase the Lifetime Map Update subscription service.

• WHAT A MINUTE! What I bought was a lifetime update version of the NA maps... What do you mean it can not be updated unless I buy it again!
PLEASE EXPLAIN, I am worried! (btw, I already updated it once...)
Next to that why make it so complicated... I buy a product, they should all behave the same, at least in regard to use on PC (BaseCamp), how Garmin Express manages them, and use on my device (SD or on the device...)
I must also say that the conditions mentioned in the FAQ you link to should be not FAQ but part of the product discription... I check to be sure, as best I could, that I got something that would work like my pre-installed maps, and that info that the FAQ mentions was NEVER presented... (nor where my emails to garmin sales/support on other aspect when making my decision so I had to go with what I could read)

OK, a few minutes later... I have looked at the product, and I remember I bought this knowing it was good for a year... and I then planned to buy the life time updates next year... now I read the fine print and see the TOTAL RIP OFF PRACTICE that I can only buy and use the lifetime updates for the preloaded mapes on my device (Europe) and apparently have to buy new maps ever year to keep up to date for North America..... WHAT A RIP OFF!
I WISH I HAD BOUGHT TOMTOM WHO PROVIDE WW MAPS AND LIFETIME UPDATES!

To explain a bit more from a ' client user ' perspective, I did not by the DVD because a) that is old fashioned, b) I assume each product was the same and just the media was different, and c) I needed the maps as the speed of internet and could not wait for a physical product to be delivered. Garmin, you really need to get up to speed with the communication an digital product age of today... you are stuck in the 90's, maybe 00's

If I am wrong in all this, or there is a solution that is more fair to us global travelers, let me know...
• I'm not sure why you're complaining about this. When you purchase a map via the webpage it is clearly mentioned what the limitations are. This taken from the Overview page that you are first presented with

Note the part in bold. It really couldn't be clearer.

I WISH I HAD BOUGHT TOMTOM WHO PROVIDE WW MAPS AND LIFETIME UPDATES!

Should you ever go this route you might care to read the details this time and note that TT also offer different map versions, with only one option updateable just like Garmin.

The LM Subscription service can only be tied to a device that had pre-loaded mapping OR maps unlocked using a DVD. The FAQ I referenced is linked on the product page on the right hand side under Related > Choosing a Map Format. Here is the product page for the City Navigator North America NT: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/maps/on-the-road-maps/city-navigator-nt/city-navigator-north-america-nt/prod1456.html

If you purchase the DVD and unlock it, you can then purchase the LM Subscription service.

If you have any further questions on this, it would be best to contact Product Support by phone.

• Are you all serious? You are defending this like lawyers - pointing to the fine text where the detail that it was not a life time map for just one format is a short sentence at the bottom of a long explanation?

The description says what FORMAT is right for me... not what LICENSING condition was right for me... I knew I needed an SD format, and was techy enough to download and put it on one of my own, so I did not need a DVD FORMAT or Preloaded SD FORMAT. I did need Life Time Updating LICENSING capability. I highly recommend Garmin just make all versions the same, or make it clear with the ' What format is right for me' title buy saying ' what format and licensing combination is right for me'.

I will leave it with this, and thanks for the advice to go to customer support (who when I had question when I was originally purchasing this product did no reply to 3 emails.. so I do hold out much hope...
• Hello,
Going back and reading The Requirements tab on the main product page you both link and it DOES NOT state this restriction!

It does state this restriction for the pre-loaded card, and some even more confusing restriction for the DVD which was another reason I did not go that way. Yes, I could have clicked on the 'What format' link, but I knew already knew an SD format was good for me, and it had no restriction link the others. Also what we are discussion here are licensing conditions, not selection a format. That ' what format is right for me ' should say ' what format and licensing conditions are right for me '. Also its not reasonable to say I should have read every page associated with every link and I would have known better... I did read the main product page, and the restriction is NOT state there.
• Help with contacting NL support

Hi,
As advised, I uses the link provide to go to support.
1. They are only available by phone during working hours (yeah, but I work too! I need evening and weekend support!)
2. The email address provided for support in the Netherlands does not work:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Lifetime updates for extra purchased maps
Sent: 01-Aug-15 12:02

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'[email protected].' on 01-Aug-15 12:03
Server error: 'Invalid recipient'

Can someone provide me with a working email address for support in the Netherlands, where I bought my product?

Thanks, Grant

Part of 'which format is right' isn't simply do you want to use a sd card? It's not about defending it as lawyers but as a buyer you should ensure you know what you're buying. Simply looking at the 'Requirement tab', which surely anyone would do, also states under sd card

If you want to update the maps, you must purchase a new card that includes the latest map data.

As for a NL e mail I don't, but you could always try this [email protected] who have always responded to me within a few days.
• I am sorry, you are wrong and condescending when you say 'Simply looking at the 'Requirement tab', which surely anyone would do, also states under sd card'.

A) As I said above, I did 'simply' do that. Of course I am going to make a reasonable effort to check if I was buying something that works (and given all the variations Garmin offers with all its vareious restrictions that is not easy to do). and

B) you are refering to preloaded SD cards. As I said before, I have the download version (which had to go on an SD care of my own since the device did not have enough memory) and under Requirements for Downloads, that restriction is not stated.

Thanks for the alternate email. But disappointing that the Dutch site has incorrect information, and some dead links... it gives a poor user impression.. bad for future sales... :-)

Thank you for letting us know about the problems with the support email. I have reported that it is being returned as invalid and we are looking into this. There is no ETA on a resolution at this time.
