Windows 10 and express not working.

Hi,
Yesterday I upgraded my computer to Windows 10, now I cannot upload to Garmin connect via Garmin express. I have three Garmin devices, Edge 200, Edge 510 and a Forerunner 110. They all show up in device manager but do not show up as usb mass storage devices in explorer. When launching Garmin express (latest version) and clicking on the add button it does not see any of my three devices!! Does anyone else have this issue!!!
  • The fact that they don't appear as mass storage devices would suggest that the USB drivers aren't loaded (or at least aren't working properly). This is the penalty of being at the bleeding edge (if you can call Windows 10 bleeding edge)
  • Sounds like a USB mass storage driver issue - check if you have the latest motherboard usb drivers installed.

It not a Garmin Express issue.(For once). I've been running GE since the first Windows 10 technical preview and haven't had any issues.
  • Sorry, I should have pointed out that I tested the USB ports with a card reader, a helmet cam, an external USB HD and an android mobile phone, all of which launched the storage device dialogue.... This would suggest to me that this is a perhaps a Garmin USB driver issue? All these devices show up in explorer and can be accessed. None of my Garmin products do!!
  • When you plug the device in do you see it under disk drives in device manager?
  • This would suggest to me that this is a perhaps a Garmin USB driver issue?

Yes - exactly that. Possibly driver signing issue.

The Garmin mass-storage devices like your Edge 200/510 and Forerunner 110 use Windows drivers. After updating to Windows 10, did you reboot the computer? Check for any updates? Are the USB Host Drivers up to date?

Your post states that the devices show in Device Manager but not how they are listed. They should be listed as Disk Drives. Are they? How exactly are they showing in Device Manager? In the Properties, what is the version of the driver that is being used for the devices?

Do the devices show in Disk Management? If so, how are they showing?

We would like to see screenshots of the following when one of the devices is connected to troubleshoot this issue:

    • Disk Management if the devices are shown
    • Device Manager with the following expanded:
      • Disk Drives
      • System Devices
      • Universal Serial Bus Controllers

    • Properties of the device from Disk Manager

Once we have this information, we will be better able to assist you.

  • Hi Lisa,
    thanks for the reply.
ATM I have just done a clean re-install of Windows 7 (including ALL the updates!!) , then am going to do an upgrade to Windows 10 straight from that. This will ensure that no other software is causing the issue. I will be using the latest version of Express from the Garmin website.
    However, in the meantime....
The devices were showing as disks in device manager and as far as I remember are using the default windows drivers.
They do also show in the disk management snap in utility, all of them show as having the correct partitioning/free space etc.
I have checked my motherboard manufacturers website and have the latest set of drivers already. The intel driver check software also confirms this!
I have also tried different USB ports and cables to rule those out of the equation!!
If the problem still persists I will post back here.

Have you tried connecting the devices while you have the clean install of Win 7 before upgrading to 10? Are the drivers loading and the devices showing properly in Windows Explorer with drive letters?

That would be something to check before upgrading to 10.

  • Hi Lisa,
yes that was the first thing I checked!
Windows 10 - clean install - still exactly the same issue!!!!
  • Reports on other forums indicate Windows 10 works fine with Garmin programs including Express so I suspect it's something local to you, exactly what though may be difficult to determine.
