Stop GE from updating firmware on unit - disable automatic update?

I'm running my Edge 510 on older software as it doesn't work with my Vector pedals on the newest. I want to use GE to sync my activities but foremost to sync new workouts to the unit (is there another way?), but GE updates my Edge's firmware every time I connect it. Yes, you can manually remove the UPDATE.GCD file but if you forget it, there's unwanted extra work restoring the old version and settings...

Is there a way to disable this automatic update?

I just checked with our Fitness team and there are no known issues of the latest firmware/system software on the Edge 510 and Vector pedals being incompatible. If you are experiencing issues with this, we need to gather more information so that we can resolve it. It would be best to contact Product Support by phone so our Fitness team can gather all the additional information for testing/troubleshooting and get it reported to our developers.

That being said, you could try sending workouts to the device using Garmin Connect Mobile on a smartphone or tablet.

change the version one up in the xml file on your device and make it read-only
that way GE thinks your device is up to date

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work. If I write protect the file after edit and start the unit, the file is somehow emptied - 0 kb. If not write protected the version field is back to 320.

One thing is strange though. When I have changed 320 to 350 (using MS XML Notepad) the file grows from 15 to 22 kb. Should be the same size right? Seems the format of the file from Garmin is really standard, or something?

Syncing workouts with my phone worked. Well, kind of. Had to reconnect and restart a couple of times to get it all over. Seems to be what we can expect.

So the Connect app will not update the firmware on the Edge 510? I know it did on the vivosmart I had earlier.
