Garmin Express - Unexpected Error

Former Member
Former Member
I am receiving an error message whenever I start Garmin Express on my Windows 8.1 laptop. Error received is: "An unexpected error has occurred and Garmin Express must close. If you continue to experience this, contact Garmin customer support."

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Garmin Express as an administrator, but the result is the same.

Please advise. I've been having this problem since the last updgrade to Garmin Express.

Typically this is a .NET Framework issue. The Event Viewer may have additional information that can be used for troubleshooting, various errors that can be Google'd for a resolution. I recommend checking there first to see if it is a .NET issue.

If so, since it is Windows 8.1, the Microsoft .NET Repair Tool is of no use. What version of .NET Framework do you have installed? If you do not have .NET version 4.5.2 installed, you can try installing that.

You also may want to try a full uninstall of Garmin Express. I recommend using the Microsoft FixIt tool to do so. Our FAQ What should I do if the computer cannot find the .msi file when updating a Garmin Software Application? has a link to FixIt as well as a list of all the Garmin Express components that need to be removed. Once completed, try to re-install Garmin Express.

If that fails, you will probably need to have a Microsoft certified technician resolve the issue.

    I have the same issue.
    - Windows 8 laptop
    - Forerunner 305
    - Express version 4.1.3.0

When I launch Express: Unexpected error, etcetera. Also consistent with other reports: It worked the first time, then the second time: no luck.

What I noticed: If I disconnect my Garmin, I can run Express without problems. However, this does not help me, because when I then connect my device, it is not recognized.

And last but not least: The only activity that I was able to upload this way, has not been synchronized to Strava. All in all, I am very sad, and the functionality is broken until further notice.

    Help is appreciated.

Why isn't this Garmin Express smart enough????

It stands to reason if you are installing GE the program should be smart enough to let you now that an update for .NET Framework is required or you are missing a software that is needed for GE to work.

Now I use the words smart enough if they has good programmers?

I have never seen a program like GE have so many problems no mater what version you use.
