Garmin Express Sync Problem

Hi,

This is the last resort posting here.
I have tried to search for a resolution without luck.
The problem.

1. Connect Garmin Edge 500 to laptop via usb.
2. Launch Garmin Express
3. Prompted to install an update v16.02 timezone
4. GMAPTZ in the Garmin device is added 574kb
5. No sync.
6 Reconnect and launch Garmin Express and get the error "There was an erro syncing with Garmin Connect"

Two problems

1. I can't upload my rides to Strava
2. Continually prompted to install update v16.02

Any advice?

I have already removed every trace of the software and reinstalled Garmin Express
  • If you aren't having issues with your time of day being incorrect, then don't stress over it. All the timezone file does it let the device know what the corrections are for the umpteen gazillion different places that have ever changing dates as to when they observe or don't observe daylight savings time and specifically what time zone a location is in.

The satellites only broadcast UTC, so the device has to use that file to figure your local time of day. But again, if you are not having problems with time of day, it's not a big deal.

There is a solution posted in the Garmin Support FAQ's and I thought there was a sticky posted somewhere on this forum about it, but I don't have the links at the moment.

If you can't find them, maybe another will answer.
  • Hi.
Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
The time has been correct one Edge 500. I've already selected the update and it says it installs fine.
The problem is that it's continually offered at every sync.
I don't know if that's linked to the error I'm getting whilst syncing my rides 'connect sync to garmin connect etc'

I'll have a look for that sticky unless anyone has the link to hand?!

    Thanks David
  • There was an error syncing to garmin connect

I've spent several hours looking through the forums and fault log without any result.
I found that by deleting GarminDevice.xml and Device.fit from the Edge500 root directory has stopped the continual prompt to install the update.
    However the sync issue remains.

This has been working fine up until last week.
I can upload using Strava and the firefox plugin perfectly, however its a pain to login each time.

Would it help to upload a log file if so which one?

Have you tried all the troubleshooting in our FAQ What should I do if I am unable to sync my mass storage fitness device using Garmin Express?

If the manual upload fails, as stated in the FAQ, the activity is corrupted and that is why it is not syncing. Once all the steps are followed, normal syncing should resume. If not, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

  • Hi Lisa,

Yes i've spent the past few hours exhausting the online resources.
I have just called customer care and they have provided a fix which I had actually tried (but tried it again anyway)
    without success.

I have manually imported the files into Garmin connect successfully therefore the .fit files are not corrupt.

I have emailed back to customer support hopefully to take this a stage further.
  • Just an update with my problem syncing.
I contacted customer support and they suggested a couple of ideas to try - without success.
I have updated garmin express to the latest version and the error persists.
I have contacted garmin support twice further and have not heard anything.
If any one else has a similar problem then I suggest a fix that works:
Uninstall garmin express and discard... and use the Strava.com to upload rides using the browser plugin.

It is possible there are some corrupt files on the device. Have you tried to manually upload the Activities from the Edge to Garmin Connect? I suggest you use the manual upload option then Master Reset the Edge. The manual upload option was covered in the FAQ article. What should I do if I am unable to sync my mass storage fitness device? If Garmin Connect refuses the uploaded file then it is corrupt and will need to be deleted. Once your data is uploaded, Master Reset the Edge 500.

  • The files upload to garmin connect manually and also automatically using the garmin plugin on strava.
Wouldn't looking at the extensive garmin express logs be a more appropriate way of suggesting a fix rather than guessing, which is all I have had from Garmin support. Resetting the device completely is quite drastic as there is no backup software included
