Download Regional Maps Only?

Is there anyway of saving on internet data charges by downloading a subset of the full North American maps rather than the full 5GB suite? In my case, I would like to download Canada only (which would be a lot smaller and is all I need). I seem to recall one could some time ago specify a map region eg. Canada + northern states, but that option does not seem to be available now, at least with my Nuvi 2597LMT.

Any help appreciated......

If your device has enough internal memory to store the Full Coverage map region then that is what Garmin Express will download. Unfortunately, there is no way to change that. If Garmin Express prompts you to select a region because of insufficient space then Canada and the Border States will be an option.

Technically, map updates require a Cable or DSL internet connection which do not suffer data limitations and per MB charges. That doesn't mean a map update will not work on a non-supported internet connection type, only that the procedure and processes were not designed with those in mind.

Thank you for the prompt response. That is m/l what I have been told by a Garmin phone CSR but I wanted to verify it and see if perhaps there was a work-around.

There are many in NA that do not have a cable or DSL connection available esp in rural areas such as myself (I have only a cellular connection) so I find it a bit odd that Garmin considers anything else to be a "non-supported internet connection type". In any case, if Garmin Express can make Canada and Border States an option for devices w/o sufficient internal memory, it would seem, to me at least, a trivial modification to make the option available to all devices (such as mine). OTOH, I have been told by a tech support person that the full NA suite is downloaded to the PC in all cases and only the required subset is then passed to the Garmin unit if its internal memory is limited.

FWIW, I have submitted the suggestion to Garmin/ideas so maybe something can eventually be done about it.

A way around this is to fill your memory with additional files so that there isn't enough room for the update, this fools Express into offering you a smaller subset. Large jpegs are a good choice.
