Edge 500 not detected by Garmin Express

Hi,

Purchased a brand new Edge 500 for the gf.

Running Windows 8.1 x64 latest version of Express as downloaded on Saturday from the Garmin site. When we originally set it up it was fine but it did do a software upgrade (I guess to the latest version available on the web)- is this what's killed it off?

When you plug the Edge into the PC you get the standard beep as its detected by Windows and you get an error saying scan the device or not - there is nothing wrong with the device - you can browse the file structure etc, etc.

Express does not see the device automatically but you can upload activities to the Classic Garmin site and Strava.

In addition you cannot download files to the device from Garmin connect such as courses.

I've removed the device from connect and factory reset it but it is still not recognised and of course it hasn't been added back to the connect account because Express can't see it!

Any help appreciated

thanks in advance.

I tried all those steps, but it didn't work.

Whilst trying to manually "force" a software update with a .GCD file, I found that my device was out of memory, so the garmindevice.xml and device.fit files could not be rewritten and hence were corrupt (0kB in size). The Garmin express, web updater, garmin communicator tools could not "detect" my Edge 500. Deleting the gps files and folder (copies of the .fit files) created 50MB of space and enabled the garmindevice.xml and device.fit files to regenerate properly and hence everything worked again.

It doesn't solve where my gpx folder came from.

The GPX folder contains Waypoints, Routes, and Track data. The folder is supposed to be there. It sounds like your hard drive had corrupted data which is causing the detection issue. I recommend running chkdsk on your device to find and remove all corrupted files. Here is our FAQ on how to do so:

How do I run a check disk or disk utility on my Garmin mass storage device?
