HELP! Did a Garmin Express software update - lost 3 months of data on my watch

I did a long bike ride today and came home to download the data from my 910XT to the computer via my ANT. I got a message saying there was new software available - Garmin Express; did I want to download it? I said yes, and it replied it would take 28 minutes; so I left and came back 25 minutes later and it was mostly done. After the software finished setting itself up, I waited another 5 minutes while it transferred data (the bar kept filling and starting over which seemed odd but I thought, with the new software, it was transferring all the workouts on my watch. Anyway, it finally 'hung' and no more data was being transferred and the bar wasn't progressing (for about 2 minutes) so I closed the software.

When I checked Garmin Connect to see what had downloaded, the answer was nothing; not today's bike ride or any repeated rides/runs from earlier. I checked the History on my watch and the last event was a xc ski from March 2015, so at least 15 more recent training events (xc skis, bike rides, runs, several races) were no longer in the watch's History file.

So, although I don't really need to recover my watch's History, I am wondering where it went and I would like to recover and record today's 85 km bike ride which I can't find on my watch or on Garmin Connect.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Up til now my 910xt and the downloading process has been flawless.

Files from ANT Fitness devices are placed in a temporary location on the computer before uploading to Garmin Connect. This folder should be empty after a successful sync so it is possible that the files from your activities are there. Use our FAQ Where do my activities go on the computer before they are uploaded to Garmin Connect? to locate this folder.

Note, files in this folder do not have a .fit extension but it is required to manually upload the files to Garmin Connect. Simply rename the file adding a .fit and then use our FAQ How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect? for instructions on the manual upload. Since the article is written for use with our mass-storage fitness devices, you will navigate to the Sync folder on the computer instead of the device. You may want to move the folder to your desktop for easier importing.
