The log file F:\Garmin\Diag\GPX Log.txt just says ERROR: cannot open '3:/usr/share/garmin/gtt/Locales.xml'

This is a very old device, Garmin Express was working fine and the maps were updated correctly but I had to do a master reset to factory settings and since then no maps are available...

Please notice that the internal storage is almost finished, but I have installed another SD card to extend the storage having a lot of free space.

From the log information you posted, the install is failing somehow with the Elevated Installer. There is not enough information here to determine exactly why it failed though. The Elevated Installer package elevates the current installation privileges of the user to allow the software to install properly. So it would seem that this could be a permission issue. Garmin Express requires that it be ran as an administrator. If not already, try logging into an Admin account on your computer. You may want to create a new Admin account that has nothing else installed to see if it will allow the map installation.

If you continue to experience problems installing the mapping to your computer, contact Product Support by phone.

I was not aware that GE had to be run/installed as Administrator.

When did this come about? Why are there not instructions on Garmin.com concerning this?

It has always been recommended to install Garmin Express with administrative rights. There are various FAQs that reference this, especially Why do I receive a "Failed. Try again?" error message when installing Garmin Express on a PC?

Looking at iqc.garmin.com and searching for "administrator" or for "run as administrator" do not produce the link you referenced. However, searching for "administrative" does.

I am unable to get to the link from garmin.com using any of the terms above.

There is no indication at http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html about running the download with administrative rights.

Hate to be nit-picking here, but if "it has always been recommended" then the "recommendation" should be pro-active - not reactive.
  • Windows generally insists that many applications should be run as administrator, it was introduced around 8 years ago to increase security. I tend to run all my applications as Administrator to ensure there are no issues.

    Lisa,

    I quote you:

" If not already, try logging into an Admin account on your computer. You may want to create a new Admin account that has nothing else installed to see if it will allow the map installation."

    1. Most Admin account are hidden. (and not recommended to activate if you are not a power user and know what you are doing)
    2. If this is a personal PC or Laptop you have Admin rights when you set it up.
    3. You can not make a Second Admin account.
    4. You can only make another user account with most rights to the PC or Laptop.
    5. To use "Run as Administrator" you click right with you mouse on an exactable program with the ending of "EXE"
    6. Most user's here are not power user so telling things like you posted will only confuse them.

There should be no problems to download or install any program on a personal PC or Laptop you have enough rights.

It they are using a Business PC or Laptop then they have no admin rights at all. That would have to be requested by the Admin of the system.
The chances of getting those right are very limited.

It have been it the IT business a long time. I have never seen so many problems with this one program call "Garmin Express".

You are asking this program to do to many things on to many platforms.

What needs to be done is to break down this programs and have one for Nuvi's, Watches, Step counts, Etc. Etc.

This one size fits all does not work. But you keep coming up with one update after another.
Only to screw up something else on some other user's device because Garmin did not take time to test it.

The facts are Garmin will never get it to work on every device no mater how many changes you make to the program.

It is time to break the program down into smaller workable programs depending on what type of device will be used.

Garmin needs to think outside of the box............

Thank you Lisa, it worked like a charm. I wasn't aware of that me too! I've set it up to run always as an administrator.

    SUSSAMB,
I also tend to run many programs by right-clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator".

As I understand it, even though I am an "Administrator", there are times when - to do certain things - I have to "elevate" my rights to accomplish the task at hand.

I was quibbling with Lisa about the comment that it had always been recommended that Express be installed with "administrative rights". The date of the link she provided was date 6/15/2015 - so "always" is a stretch.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to suggest in the Garmin Express "system requirements" that the "install" be "Run as Administrator" by right clicking on the .exe file.
