GE v4.0.21.0 - now erases data on device after sync?

After installing GE v4.0.21.0, my activity data is automatically erased on my device after sync. There appears to be no checkbox in GE or on Garmin Connect to prevent this from happening. Is this by design in GE v4.0.21.0?
  • I've just checked on mine, I can't see the option for auto erase. As Tim said, it used to be there in previous versions but I haven't seen it for a while.\

Double checked my 920 too, the .FIT files are still present.
  • Umm strange.

There certainly used to be an option for this on GC (not on any devices though) but I can't see it anymore and think has been removed.
Default was always don't delete anyway.

What GC version are you using? I just updated mine to the seemingly latest 4.0.21.0

    yep same version tim.

seemed to perhaps start doing it after that update to 4.0.21??.

it has just done it (deleted) again now. I came back from a ride quickly checked the garmin/activity folder on the device and there it was dated 25/5. then I saw it disappear and the 'GC sync complete' message appeared. FIT files from 19/5 and before are still there

    strange and mildly annoying

edit: just done the watch RETIRE and re-add as suggested above. Doesn't work unfortunately.

I've also seen this change of behaviour with 4.0.21 unfortunately. Previously all my .FIT files were left on the watch, yet after a successful sync via cable and Garmin Express, the two files from today are no longer there on the watch. The activities are there online in Connect, but my swim had a missed lap so I went to look for and fix the original file and noticed it was missing from the watch.

If anyone can work out how to change this behaviour back to how it used to be, I'd love to know!

Just a long shot here, but did you have activity delete set on the old version? If so, perhaps there is still something in the registry for that setting.

    Thanks

  • If it is deleting files, how much free space is left on your device?
  • Has anyone tried it with a 920XT yet? I don't want to upgrade if it deletes my FIT files on the device. Also, if you sync via WiFi does it still delete the FIT Files? Thanks.

    I have

    and it does (via usb)
  • I am sorry that you all are experiencing this issue. We have opened a case to get this resolved. In the meantime, if you are concerned about activities being removed off of the watch, you can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on supported devices or manually upload the activities to Connect. To manually upload the activities on a mass storage device:
    • Log in to Garmin Connect and visit the Activities page
    • Click Import
    • Click Choose File or Browse
    • Select the file and choose Open
    • Click Upload activities from file
    • Repeat these steps until you have uploaded all files

Hmm, not happy about all my activities having been deleted from Garmin without asking. I hope a fix for this will be released very soon...

I have a same problem (FR 220). I hope that this critical bug will be fix soon.

As developer of embedded devices I can only say that I haven't seen company with worse software support than Garmin. Garmin Express is unbelievable wrong piece of software. Garmin Express is not much complex software, but probably software with biggest number of bug per code lines.
  • It has been reported that Garmin Express seems to be randomly deleting FIT files from the \Garmin\Activity\ folder on some USB fitness devices. The Garmin Express developers are aware of this and looking into a resolution. These devices are USB mass storage mode devices so you can backup the Activity folder before opening Express, negating any possibility of Express deleting wanted .FIT files after syncing.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.
