Can't update maps - memory/card issue -

Former Member

Express is telling me there is a new map update available for my Edge Touring Plus:

Routable Cycle Map of Europe
Version 2015.10
File Size 6.18gb
Estimated Install time 1 hour and 23 minutes

When I try to download the update to my edge, I get told there's not enough internal memory and to install an SD card with between 7 and 32gb storage.
The original card in the device was only 8 gb, so I have replaced this with a 32gb card, which I copied all of the files from the old card onto.
I now have 23.9gb of free space on the card.
When I click OK, Express tells me it cannot find a memory card.
My Edge could obviously read the card as it's able to recognise and use use all of the existing map files that had been copied to it.

Here's what I've tried:
I backed up all existing data from my SD card, then formatted the card to FAT32
I inserted the card and powered on my Edge. Again, the Edge must have recognised the card, as it wrote 4 new folders to it (Activities, Courses, Newfiles and SQL).
I reconnected the Edge to Express. Again I got the prompt to update, then told I had insufficient memory and no card detected.

I've removed the Edge from Garmin Express, rebooted the PC and re-added the Edge to Express,
I got the same error messages regarding the map update.

It seems it's only Express that's unable to detect the card - My edge is happy to detect and use it. I've checked for updates to Express and it says I'm running the latest version - 4.0.20.0

Has anybody else come across (and hopefully sorted out) this issue?

Have been through the Garmin troubleshooting page

    All other devices disconnected
Plugged the Edge into a rear USB port (have actually tried in ALL USB ports)
    Formatted the SD card again
Checked drive designation - Windows sees the Edge as F: drive and the SD card as H: drive
Closed down all running 3rd party apps and disabled antivirus
PC is running Win Media player 12.0.7601.18741

Still no detection of the card.
  • When you say you have been through the troubleshooting, do you mean this one?:
Why won't the map update applications recognize the SD card?

If you have gone through those steps and Garmin Express isn't recognizing the memory card, I would recommend using another computer (which is the last step of that article). Generally when Express will not recognize the memory card, it is caused by a problem with the WMI Repository in Windows so the memory card is not being reported as being a drive inside the Garmin device.

That's the one, although I didn't have access to another PC at the time. I've now borrowed a friend's laptop and, yes, that one does recognise the card and is downloading the update. So, thanks for the update, at least I have sorted my immediate issue.

Regards the WMI Repository, I've checked a couple of articles have run a winmgmt /verifyrepository on my PC, which reports that the repository is consistent.
Are there any specific checks/diagnostics I can do to sort out the issue on my PC?
  • Could you please follow the instructions in this thread as you're appearing on the forum as 'unregistered', thanks

I have the same fun and games too.

This is what I got from Garmin but I can't get to the diagnostics screen so still no joy in updating can any body show me the diagnositic access?

I would suggest formatting the SD Card.

In order to reformat your SD Card please follow the instructions below:

Some of Garmin’s newer devices are now Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) devices which do not automatically go into Mass Storage mode when connected to a computer.

    1. Unplug the unit from computer.
    2. Power up the unit and go to main screen.
    3. Press the View Map icon.
    4. Press the Speed data field.
    5. Press and hold the Speed data field (round field) for ten seconds.
    6. A Diagnostics page will appear.
    7. Scroll down and choose "MTP Settings"
    8. It will likely say "MTP Auto Detect". Change this to "Mass Storage Single Session", then press save.

The device will now go into mass storage mode when connected. After the initial connection, it will go back to MTP mode when connected again.

Follow the steps below to format the card:

    1. Place the SD card into the SD card slot in your device.
    2. Connect your device to your computer.
    3. Open Spotlight (CMD-SPACE on keyboard)
    4. Type Disk Utility (in Spotlight search box).
    5. Click Disk Utility to open the application.
    6. Click the drive to format on the left side of the disk utility.
    7. Click the parent of the SD card (it normally has the size in the name).
    8. Click on the Partition Tab.
    9. Under the Volume Scheme select "1 Partition". (OS 10.7 Lion this is called Partition Layout).
    10. In the format area, select MS-DOS (FAT).
    11. Click Options.
    12. Select MBR (Master Boot Record).
    13. Click OK.
    14. In the Name field type a name/title for the SD card (Do not leave the name called "Untitled").
    15. Click Apply to format the card.

On occasion some individuals running OS 10.6 may receive an error in the process. If an error occurs:

    1. Click the Erase tab
    2. Select MS_DOS (FAT) from the format drop down
    3. Click Erase
    4. After the erase is complete follow steps 1-13 for formatting the card

If the problem persists I would recommend using a different SD card.

The instructions are correct for putting the 2599LMT into Mass Storage mode but if you are on a Mac then they are irrelevant. Mac's do not support MTP devices. The Nuvi will automatically go into mass storage mode when it is connected. It will show up in Finder as Garmin and the SD card underneath it. Usually memory cards are called UNTITLED or NO NAME when they are brand new. You can also insert the SD card in a SD card Reader then proceed with the Format instructions. Please contact by phone if you have any other questions.
