There was a problem communicating... in Basecamp after updating from Express

Hi, everyone:

I wasn't sure where to post this, so if anyone can redirect me to the appropriate forum, I'd appreciate it.

Anyway, I have a 2595 that Garmin Express said I had some updates. After I installed the updates, I got the "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device..." error. Researching this issue, I believe it to be file corruption. I read a FAQ that listed some of the files that it could be (gpx, jpg and one other file) and their locations, but I didn't see any files with those extensions listed in the folders that were mentioned. So the problem appears to be with a botched update. I would just re-download it if Garmin Express would let me, but I guess it installed well enough for it to make Garmin Express believe that the software was installed correctly.

The other issue that came up after the update was that my 2595 no longer cleans up after itself when I transfer data, disconnect and reboot. The next time I connect to Basecamp, the temporary files are still there and I see nothing related to my device. Usually I can see read only versions of my saved places.

The updates were:

Traffic Text, All Languages, GLX, V1 5.60
Time Zone Map 16.00

Software version is 8.20

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can give.

Thanks!

Bill
  • First, if a device doesn't work as expected after an update the first thing to try is a master reset.

Second, after Basecamp has sent data to your device and it's appeared on the nuvi you need to delete the file that BaseCamp sends, normally this is named temp.gpx and it'll be in the GPX folder.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to respond to my plea for help!

By "master reset" do you mean the "Erase all user data?" option that appears when you press the lower left corner of the device while turning it on? (Please don't take this as evidence that I know a lot about the Garmin devices because I don't. I only learned this as a result of searching for a way to easily delete user information.)

Hey, I just noticed that there is no internal storage folder! Yikes, I think my device is totally hosed.
  • Not sure how that could have happened. If so then you will need to call Product Support.

    Hey, thanks for trying! :)

We are currently looking into this problem. I do not have a time frame for the resolution at this time. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Apparently "looking into the problem" means "we are rolling out a fix" because today you released a fix to the Timezone update, available through Garmin Express, that fixed the issue. Thank you for the QUICK response!

I don't see a newer (than 16.00) Timezone Map release (yet). What I do see is that Garmin has changed, on their servers, the "latest" release to v13.00.

That simply prevents the problematic v16.00 release from being seen as an update until a newer version is produced.

That's interesting. For me, it literally said "fix for Timezone 16.00" Hopefully the update flows down to you soon. Or maybe their "fix" was to roll it back?
  • Hi Bilko,

Just been through that problem after an update. Tried all the suggested fixes but nothing worked.

Try this. It just worked for me.

Shut down and disconnect the GPS. Shut down the computer. Restart the computer.

Start Basecamp. Connect the GPS USB cable to a port you have NOT used (for the GPS) before.

It looks like the correct driver does not load if you use a USB port that has been used by the GPS before. This forces Windows to look for a driver when the new port is used.

    Mine is working fine now.

    Hope that helps.

    See this: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=9189

In other forums users are reporting that this does not really install a V16.01 of the Time Zone map, but instead gets you back to V15.0 and fixes the incorrect Part Number code in GarminDevice.xml.

I did not install the V16.0 time zone map on any of my devices (I read the warnings in this thread so avoided the problem). So for me, I am still at time zone map v15.0 and this 16.01 update is not being offered to me by Garmin Express.
