Why can't Garmin Express can't be installed in Windows XP? It still works fin on one of my other windows XP computers, but I can't install it on one of my laptop PCs. No I can't upgrade it to a later OS. It works just fine. Why should I be forced to upgrade it? I have used Garmin products for 20 years. I think it is time to switch to a different brand.
Why can't you install it on this one? As you say, it works on your other one. As far as I know it should install, system requirements are Vista SP2 or later
Currently, Garmin says that current version of Express is not compatible with XP. However, if your other machine still has the install executable for the GE version that still runs, you could use that older version.
It is a bit presumptuous to think that software developers should keep their current versions backward compatible with all older operating systems. That would increase costs to all of us.
I would like to point out that Windows XP is still used by 15% of all computers, if a company don't want to support that market it is their choice. For my part I tried to install Garmin Express on 2 different Win XP computers with no luck, and after understanding that Garmin had stopped supporting Win XP I had to return my first GPS (FR15) to the shop. I will look for another solution or company.
Chances are the other brand you are looking at will not support XP either. Its a dead OS - why should developers spend all their time coding for old OS's when there are so many bugs they still have to fix for the current OS.
I don't say that Garmin made the wrong decision, but as to why, 15% of market have to buy from competitors. FYI, when searching a GPS clock I found that both TomTom and Suunto supports XP.
So, one can not make any particular statement about what percentage of Garmin owners would be impacted by Garmin's decision to not support XP. It might be an even higher percentage.
MapInstall 4.0.4 still works but Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later is required. So to that extent, Garmin is providing support, and, in addition, GarminMapUpdater 3.3.4 runs on XP.
