    OK, I have my name now!

    Repeating my original post:

    Same problem here, i.e. I can't install Garmin Express at all. Recent install of Windows 8.1 64-bit. Have portable C++ and .NET 4.5 installed. Trying, as Admin, to run GarminExpressInstaller version 4.0.21.0 shows two GarminExpressInstaller processes very briefly in Process Explorer, and two instances of dllhost.exe which last a bit longer, then nothing. Clearly some other bit of software is missing.

    I am sorry that you are having trouble installing Garmin Express. The only thing that I can recall seeing that keeps the Garmin Express installer from launching is if there is a Windows Installer already running in the background. Check the task manager for any instances of msiexec.exe and end them. Make sure to check processes for all users. If this doesn't solve the problem, it would be best to contact support by phone.

    No sign of MSI. Seems crazy I have to sit on a phone queue for ages to speak to someone who will run through a diagnosis tree remotely -- can't you just send me that diagnosis tree and cut out the middleman?

    Located installer log, in c:\Users\[me]\AppData\Local\Temp\Garmin_Express_...log, which uncovered the error, quoted here to help others:

    Error 0x80131902: Failed to run per-user mode.

    Searching for that suggested my .NET install was corrupt, and after a number of failed attempts at repair I gave up and did a full-scale Windows Repair-in-place, which was a major pain, but it did fix the problem.

    I had an error "This app can't run on your PC"
    Windows 8.

    After some excitements and excursions I think it is the installer that isd struggling not actual instal of Express. - I suppoer tha installer is designed to make the instaslaion automatic and easier!

    I went into Control Panel, programs, Programs and features

    and found two garmin programmes;

    Garmin embeded Installer and Garmin Express

    I ran Garmin express, Installed it and it all worked. I have had express running for a year so it was there although updated last month to 4.0.15.0

    I concluded/guess the problem is with the installer.

    I rather wish that Garmin would make sure they get the basics right. I rarely use all the bloated software that they put on the web and feel cheated when resources at Garmin appear to be creating oodles of unused software copying Strava and others. Better to get the basics right of [providing excellent devices to collect GPS data and load it to my computer; reliably and wiothout trying to build a faux relationship with me. The devices I love best are the ones that work well.
