If you are having trouble getting Garmin Express to install, follow these steps:

Step A: Close all running programs

    Step B: Clear "Temp" files
    1. Press the Windows key + R
    2. Type %temp%
    3. Press OK
    4. Press Ctrl + A
    5. Press the delete key
    6. Confirm that you would like to delete all files
(Note) You may "Skip" any files currently in use

    Step C:
Make sure that your computer will not go into "Sleep" or "Hibernate" mode.
    Windows 7:
    1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Power Options.
    2. On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings next to the selected plan.
    3. On the Change settings for the plan page, click Change advanced power settings.
    4. On the Advanced settings tab, double-click Sleep, double-click Sleep after, and then do one of the following:

i: If you're using a laptop, click On battery or Plugged in (or both), click the arrow, and then click Never.
ii:If you're using a desktop computer, click Setting, click the arrow, and then click Never.

    5. Double-click Hibernate after, and then do one of the following:
i: If you're using a laptop, click On battery or Plugged in (or both), click the arrow, and then click Never.
ii: If you're using a desktop computer, click Setting, click the arrow, and then click Never.

    6. If you also want the display to stay turned on, double-click Display, double-click Turn off display after, and then do one of the following:
i: If you're using a laptop, click On battery or Plugged in (or both), click the arrow, and then click Never.
ii: If you're using a desktop computer, click Setting, click the arrow, and then click Never.

    7. Click OK, and then click Save changes.

    Windows 8:
If you're using a laptop, click the battery icon Picture of battery icon in the notification area on the taskbar, and then select one of the power plans that appear on the battery meter. By default, the Balanced and Power saver plans appear on the battery meter. Your computer manufacturer might provide additional plans and might customize the battery meter.

If you aren't using a laptop, or if you want to use a power plan that isn't on the battery meter, do the following:
i: Open Power Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Power Options.
ii: On the Select a power plan page, select a power plan.
Note:If you don't see the power plan that you want to use, click Show additional plans.

    Alternative Software
Download a portable, Freeware package called Don't Sleep
    http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Microsoft/DontSleep
and run it during the Garmin Express task.

    Step D:
Right click on Garmin Express install executable
    Click on "Run as Administrator"

I followed these steps and it is still not working. I click the executable and run as administrator and still nothing happens.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks,

Assuming that you have all other programs closed (not minimized, but CLOSED) - and the reason you do this is to make sure that you see all messages that you might need to respond to - then fire up "Task Manager" CNTL-ALT-DEL and see what apps are running and what "Processes" are running. Not sure what the GE task will be but it should be apparent.

What we are trying to determine is what is going on when "nothing happens"

Same problem here. Recent install of Windows 8.1 64-bit. Have portable C++ and .NET 4.5 installed. Trying to run GarminExpressInstaller version 4.0.21.0 as Admin shows two GarminExpressInstaller processes very briefly in Process Explorer, and two instances of dllhost.exe which last a bit longer, then nothing. Clearly some other bit of software is missing.

    @jgermann

You try to say what in post #3?

With your instruction GE folder still present on path Users/all users/Garmin.

    @[email protected]

    Try this:

    1.) uninstall garmin express
2.) turn off and back on your PC
3.) In folder options enable to show hidden folders and hidden system folders
    4.) Go to users/Your name/Appdata/local/ and delete folder: Garmin_Ltd._or_its_subsid
5.) Go to Users/all users/Garmin/ and delete folder Express, Events and folder Logs and CoreService
    6.) Restart Pc
7.) install GE version 4.0.20 and try if will work or not.

If work then you can update to latest version of GE inside GE
