Issue with updating my Garmin using Garmin Express

Hello everyone,

I need some assistance on how to proceed with an issue I am having with updating my Garmin nüvi® 2598LMTHD.

Garmin Express version 4.0.20.0. is installed on my windows 7 computer.
When I plug in my Garmin into the computer I get a message that the device driver software was unsuccessful and is not able to connect to the computer. I uninstalled the Garmin Express once and have restarted my computer several times with the same result. I am getting very frustrated with this.

Sounds like there is a problem between the computer and the device. Garmin Express will not see the device if the device driver is not working. I thought Win 7 did not need extra Garmin drivers but you might try

I did find this link on another thread and previously downloaded it. Still had the issue when I re-downloaded it.
  • I am sorry for the troubles. The nuvi 2598 is a Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) which requires Windows Media Player 11 or later to be installed. Update Windows Media Player to at least version 11 then try again. If you continue to have troubles try another computer or contact Garmin Support by phone.

What are the system requirements for my MTP device?

I have the latest version of the Windows Media Player installed on my computer. I don't have another computer to try it out. Any other suggestions before I call Garmin?

Other than reinstalling or repairing Windows Media Player you could try changing the mode in which the device connects to the computer.

Please use the following steps to temporarily change the communication mode of your nuvi:

    1. Disconnect the USB cable then turn on the Nuvi

    2. On the main screen, press the Volume icon

    3. Press and hold the top right corner of the screen until the diagnostic screen appears

    4. Press Configurations and Settings. If it isn’t there go to step 5

    5. Press MTP Settings

    6. Select the third option, mass storage single session, then press Save

    7. Reconnect the USB cable

This changes the nuvi to mass storage mode which is just like a USB flash drive connecting to the computer. It uses Microsoft USB Mass Storage USB drivers. Any more driver error messages would identify an issue with that particular computer.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.

That seemed to do the trick! I wished this would have been listed somewhere in the trouble shooting area of the website.
  • If you mean the trouble shooting forum in Connect that isn't for issues with Express.
