Hi,
I was having a lot of trouble installing map updates to my sat nav (nuvi 1340) and Edge Touring. I must've tried 4 or 5 times but it always failed with no stated cause, leaving the device without maps. I trawled garmins support web-site and forums and tried many of the suggestions - check express for updates, try removing and re-adding each device, try a different USB cable, make more space on the nuvi 1340 by deleting unwanted foreeign language help files & voices, plus probably a couple more I can't remember.
I worked out the cause of the problem myself and it was a lot simpler and easy to fix. Because these updates were taking so long I would leave the computer and Windows would eventually go into sleep mode. Windows going into sleep mode was obviously causing the map update to fail. This explained why when I 'woke up' the PC by moving the mouse, the failure would happen within 30 seconds. The connection was presumably broken.
So, and this applies atleast to Windows 7, before starting the map update disable sleep mode on the PC!
Control Panel->System and Security->Power Options ... the click 'Change when the computer sleeps' and on the following screen you'll be able to select 'Never'.
Apologies if this solution appears on other threads on here, but I couldn't find anything about sleep mode and there's certainly nothing on the main Garmin support pages.
Hope this might help someone.
