Garmin Express Kills My Mouse!

Former Member

Hello,

I recently purchased a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Wireless Mouse (connects via 2.4 GHz USB but NOT Bluetooth). I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with all updates current.

When attempting to update my Garmin GPS unit with Garmin Express, the mouse immediately disconnected and would not reconnect. I attempted to fix the problem by restarting my computer, but once I restarted Garmin Express, the mouse went dead again. I attempted to fix the problem by removing and reinstalling Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center and USB drivers, then restarting - the mouse went dead again once I started Garmin Express. I finally uninstalled Garmin Express via keyboard, and restarted the computer. The mouse works fine again.

Has anyone heard of Garmin Express interfering with wireless mice such as this, and, is there an alternative method for me to update my Garmin GPS unit other than with Garmin Express?

Thank you.
  • Never. I use wireless mice with my 3 PCs and never an issue. Are you sure it's Express? If it's happening with your GPS device plugged in then it's more likely to be a USB conflict within your system.

It happens whether the unit is plugged in via USB or not. I've also found that WeatherBug also causes the same thing. I presume it's something related to the USB driver(s) or perhaps an underlying component of Windows (e.g., .Net Framework) used by both programs and the mouse, as well.

Do you have a Toshiba laptop?

    No, HP Desktop.

I tried uninstalling .Net Framework, and updated to 4.6 "Preview" (aka 4.5.3, as listed in Installed Programs).

Tried reinstalling Garmin Express, and now, GE will not install. Tried removing Garmin Registry Keys, restarting, and trying again - still won't install.

I think I may just give up and use the newly-found-by-me Garmin Map Updater. It's really the only thing I need.

The "response" from Garmin "technical support"...shaking my head...

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I am happy to assist you. I am sorry for your troubles. I have never heard of the Garmin Express program interfering with a mouse before or any other program of that nature. Garmin Express is a piece of software and would have no bearing on a piece of hardware like the mouse. It is very strange that this would happen. Unfortunately, the Garmin Express program is the only way to update your mapping. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
  • The official view is that Express is the only way ....

Any idea why? Because Garmin Express presents a means to make money with purchased add-ons? It is very irritating to find out all I needed with a simple tool, that runs lightning-fast.
  • What purchased add-ons? Sorry but you've lost me.

As for lightning fast. I've used both Express and MapUpdater and seen no difference in overall speed.

Like SUSSAMB, you have lost me with your claim that Express is a means to sell "purchased add-ons". Would you mind providing an example, please?

As Technical Support indicated, I can not image how a "software" package would cause a piece of "hardware" to malfunction. But, since it seems to be happening to you, I hope you will post whenever you solve the problem.

There are other ways of updating maps as you have discovered. Look over at poi-factory.com for some alternatives.
