Garmin Express 4.0.19.0 - "error syncing with Garmin Connect." - Forerunner 220

I am having problems syncing my Forerunner 220 (ver 3.10) with Garmin Connect.
It all started after I have updated my Workouts on my web page and wanted to sync it with the device.
Sync fails every time and after I unlock the watch from the USB cradle I see on the watch "Updating...", however, the sync failed.

Please help. I am attaching the failing log:

    An error that I was able to pull from the log you attached indicates "Illegal characters in path". When sending the Workout from Connect it is stored in "C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\(unit id)\Sync\Download\FIT_TYPE_5" folder and then transferred to your device in the (drive letter)\Garmin\NEWFILES folder.

    Trying deleting these folders and sending the Workout again. If you still experience trouble, please contact product support.

  • The entire device area (drive letter)\Garmin\ was only files (no folders) with garbled characters, so I figured something is totally wrong.
    I fixed my problem by going to Factory Defaults from the device, loosing my last workout which was not synced.
