Ok, this is probably a dumb question but what does Garmin Express do? I loaded it on my pc but after I try and launch it the icon lights up but nothing happens.

Garmin Express is *supposed* to upload data from a device to Garmin Connect, and download data from Garmin Connect to a device. The device must be connected to the computer at the time - either by USB or by BlueTooth.

Sounds fairly simple - but it would appear that Garmin often have difficulty in communicating with their own devices using their own software (other sites - eg RideWithGPS, Strava, etc - seem to have almost no difficulty communicating with Garmin devices). GE has rarely worked satisfactorily for me - I don't even bother with it now, but do everything manually; MUCH fewer headaches that way.
  • It also does far more than that. It updates software and maps, if applicable, on your device.
  • When you turn on Express, don't you see the express display? You would need to in order to add a device so that it can do its job.

Garmin Express is software that helps you manage your Garmin devices.
It can 1) Update your maps 2) Upload activities to Garmin Connect 3) Register your products, 4) Update golf course maps, 5) etc.

I am not sure what is meant when you say that the "icon" lights up. If GE was correctly installed, you should see a GE screen. If not, then the install may have failed or is still waiting for permissions.

Assuming that you downloaded and installed Express correctly, you will need to turn your device on and attach it to your computer. You can then register the device.

I am sorry that you are having trouble with Express. We have seen this behavior (mainly on Lenovo computers) where the resolution is so high that the dpi scaling is set to 250% by default. This causes the Garmin Express window to open off of the screen. Our developers are aware of this behavior and are looking into a resolution. In the meantime, to fix this:

    • Run Garmin Express from the shortcut which should cause it to show on the taskbar
    • Hold down the shift key and right-click on the Garmin Express icon
    • Click Move
    • Press and release one of the arrow keys on the keyboard
    • Move the mouse and the Garmin Express window should appear and follow the mouse
    • Click anywhere on the screen to place the window

Once you have done this, Garmin Express will remember where you last left the window so you shouldn't have to do this again.
