Downloading maps

I use these websites openfietsmap, freizeitkarte-osm to download my maps.

You can download many different countries from both these sites at the same time. It can be anywhere from 4 GB to 6 GB and any one time.

We are talking 3 or 4 countries form each website.

Plus I can go to different websites and Forums and all of this takes 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours to download all this data I think the longest took me 3 hours because I had a backup of my computer start.

Reason why is all of this maps are compressed in EXE files or ZIP files.

When you download from Garmin you get one file then another and then another at a time all in your temp directory.

Then it takes all the files and puts then into an install package before it even installs the map update.

You are connected with Garmin Express the whole time.

So this goes on and on for over 5 to 6 hours.

You can not disconnect while this is going on.

Rather than making one EXE file that a user can download and install on his computer and Nuvi.

This way you do not have to stay connected to Garmin the whole time. which is a total waste of time for any users.

So it is not my Internet provider that is slow it is the way you have to download Map updates from Garmin.

Make it simple for the user put the update in an EXE or Zip file.

Let the user download it in a reasonable time.

Disconnect from Garmin Express and install the update.

For what reason does Garmin need to be connect the whole time????

That is the way most companies do update installs.

Not stay connected to Garmin the whole time.
  • I use those sites also but there is a significant difference. First, all you're downloading is a simple map. There is no junction view file, ASR files etc. Second, the maps are open source and not encrypted.

Bear in mind too that Express is designed to load maps in the background. If you allow that to happen the actual installation onto the device is much simplified.

At what point is the encryption unlocked?

I would thing once I have made a handshake and It sees that I am granted an update.

Is encryption unlocked while it is being downloaded to the temp directory?
    OR
Is encryption unlocked after it makes a install setup?
    OR
Is encryption unlocked after it installs on my Nuvi?
    OR
    on my PC?

When ever it does it is still downloads each and every file one by one.
Rather than a complete package encrypted or not.

If it was a complete install package encrypted or not is still would be much faster to download in one part instead of one item and then another item and then another item so on and so on.

It does not matter if the junction view files or ASR files or the 3D files are in the same install.

The install should have the smarts to know what to do.
Instead of compiling the complete package on a users PC before you can even install it.

This is just a waste of time for anyone.

And all the time you are connected with Garmin Express.

Get the update on you PC unencrypted because it knew who you were and the Nuvi you are updating.

    Then disconnect from Garmin.

And then let the user install his or her update without having to be connected.

This can not be so hard to do?????
  • If it is unencrypted on your PC it opens the map up to piracy. Note it worked this way in MapUpdater as well, and still does if you use MapUpdater, so while you might think it should be simple it isn't.

The method Garmin uses has worked well for years and still does for most people. Some struggled with MapUpdater, some now struggle with Express but then I've seen some folks struggle to download OSM mapping :)

Note you can download the map just to your PC, then disconnect and install it to your nuvi, but you'll then not have the ASR, junction view files etc.

    @ SUSSAMB,

Well I have done that, copied it to a USB stick and install it on my other laptop.

You need the key to unlock the map.

That I have and you can get it from MYGarmin under your account.

Now you say you will not get the other files.

    Well you are wrong.

    These files are there also.

DB file, SRX files, JCV file and Sids files.

    Along with the GMAPPROM.IMG.

You only have to copy the files over to your Nuvi and add your GMAPPROM.unl file with the key you received form MyGarmin account.

Then all works just as it should. The same in Mapsource.

I have been around Garmin for a long time.

You and Garmin should welcome ways to improve the download time for your user base.

Not tell your users that this is the way we have always done it.

Then turn around and because Garmin made a change to the Garmin Connect app and users are not happy with it.
Then you come back at them with a take or leave point of view.

It has to be a 2 way street with Garmin and the users.

To many times I read the Garmin point of view it works for us when we test.

That is not the way to deal with the user base.

They do not want to here how great the software works for you or Garmin.

These users have real problems and all of this has gone on far to long for them.

I have no more to say because it will go no where no matter what any user comes up with.....

Garmin and this forum are closed to any ideas that might come from their user base......
  • Yes you can do various manual copies, and jump through various hoops, but I was talking about users downloading the map for Basecamp/Mapsource to use then using those programs with MapInstall to install the maps to your PC. However even this shouldn't be an issue for most users, as Express will do the job automatically and update software etc.

You clearly have issues with Express, but as we've discussed before most folks do not and happily run Express.

Since you have no more to say I'll close this thread.

I totally agree with the OP. Rather than suggest solutions or promise improvements, you tell your customer base to just take it or leave it. Your customers will change brands sooner than you realize if you dont change your behavior in dealing with them and their issues. I for one is getting tired of the 12-16 hours i need just to update my NUVI Maps.
