Deleted wrong text file

Nuvi 3790
Accidently deleted the English text file. How do I get it back?
  • Run Express and look under Tools, Optional Updates
  • Oscar_Nelsen

In order to restore that file you will want to use Garmin Express.

Add your device to the program, click on Tools > Utilities tab > Optional Updates > Language Files and select the language that you want to install. After clicking the "Install Now" at the bottom it should restore this information.

  • The installation takes a long time. My first attempt was not successful. Trying again now.
  • Strike 2. After device reboot, all the English voices are there, but not the .glx text file.
  • Could you send me the PRX.glx and TRF.glx I need?
  • Thanks to SUSSAMB & Anthony for your help.

After disconnecting 2 hours later and power up, message was displayed that restart was required. After that, all glx files had been restored. Is there a standard sequence for disconnect, power on/off, reconnect, etc. for downloads or updates to be installed?
  • This may be an even dumber question, but is there a English US glx file in the Text folder?
  • No. That file is a default file and cannot be removed or added. It is stored in memory inaccessible to the user to ensure there is always one text file available.

Not sure about any standard sequence. However having installed the files you do need to ensure you fully switch off and then restart your nuvi. Often the mistake made is that the nuvi is only put into 'sleep' mode. As an aside, it's best to shut your nuvi down completely occasionally and do a 'cold' rather than 'warm' start. This ensures you don't get any strange behaviour from your nuvi. It's like the need to shut down your PC completely just so that it can correct any issues that have built up.
  • Thanks again. Makes sense as there can always be a ghost in the system.

I started this purge of unnecessary files to gain more space, not knowing anything about mini-SDSD cards or that I even had a port. My file deletion days are over and am now on a quest to gather all the info I need on how to add a mini-SDSD, to load my Topo DVD (with or without a SD adapter), and to get the Nuvi to recognize and use it. I am anticipating there may be some magic involved.
