Updating maps to new Garmin 760......how long??

Hi

I have just bought a Camper 760LMT-D and am in the process of updating maps. However it's taking an extraordinary length of time.....been at it five hours now!! So i'm beginning to think this isn't updating right at all.

I installed an 8gb card (Garmin recommended that size), opened up Garmin Express, connected the unit and followed the online instructions from there on. I've lost count of the times after each update it's told me to disconnect the unit from PC to install, then plug back in and repeat this process again....and again....and again. Each time having to unplug then reconnect again!

Would i be right in assuming after this length of time that these updates are not going into the unit properly?

I've followed every single instruction given so cannot see what's wrong and there just seems no end in sight at all.

Any suggestions/opinions appreciated.

Well it's difficult to know exactly what's going on here. Again I've rarely been asked to disconnect then reconnect. Generally the only time that happens is for a software update.

Have a look in Settings, Map & Vehicles, myMaps to see what map is installed. If you can post a screen shot of what Express is showing that might help.

This is what it states in Maps on the unit now.

    CN Europe NTU
    2015.40 FULL

Unfortunately Express won't let me get a 'screenshot'....it won't even let me copy 'n paste whats on there either!
  • Well in that case the map update has completed as 2015.40 is the latest one.

As background most updates involve additional files being added to your nuvi, so don't require a disconnect/reconnect. A software update however loads a file called gupdate.gcd to your nuvi, which the nuvi runs when it boots, and if it is continually asking you to connect/disconnect this may have corrupted. I'd try deleting the gupdate.gcd file and then see what happens.

You'll find the file in the .system folder. To see that you'll need to set Windows to show hidden and system files, and may also have to set your GPS to mass storage rather than mtp mode.

(Note to provide screenshots it's a case of using the 'snipping tool' in Windows, but don't worry now as let's see what happens when you try the above)
  • Also ... when updating, you may be reconnecting to Express too soon after the reboot. It sometimes takes a couple of minutes for the second stage of the update to be applied to the device and update the GarminDevice.xml file after the reboot. If you connect it back to your computer before this completes, GarminDevice.xml does not get updated so Garmin Express will "think" you still need the update. So ... boot it all the way up, give it a few minutes, then reconnect to the computer and Express.

Having gone through hours in the 'operating theatre' yesterday i'm a bit reluctant to remove anything to see what happens! Knowing my luck i'd end up losing something and end up back at square one! I'm going to do a few known local routes with it and see how it functions/reacts.

Contacted a friend of mine earlier and his Garmin took three hours to update when he first bought it...and his connection is faster than mine.

Both SUSSAMB and ADBUCK are exactly correct. Software updates do need the device to be fully powered on and some even need 3 to 5 minutes in order to finalize once the GUPDATE.GCD (system software) or other update files such as traffic get on the unit.

Please note that Garmin has no control over how fast your maps download as we are able to offer them just about as fast as you can download. I have seen customers download maps at 100Mbps so if the update is taking longer than you would like, I recommend discussing that issue with your internet provider.

If you continue to have trouble with the Software updates, feel free to contact our customer support team.
