Updating maps to new Garmin 760......how long??

Former Member

Hi

I have just bought a Camper 760LMT-D and am in the process of updating maps. However it's taking an extraordinary length of time.....been at it five hours now!! So i'm beginning to think this isn't updating right at all.

I installed an 8gb card (Garmin recommended that size), opened up Garmin Express, connected the unit and followed the online instructions from there on. I've lost count of the times after each update it's told me to disconnect the unit from PC to install, then plug back in and repeat this process again....and again....and again. Each time having to unplug then reconnect again!

Would i be right in assuming after this length of time that these updates are not going into the unit properly?

I've followed every single instruction given so cannot see what's wrong and there just seems no end in sight at all.

Any suggestions/opinions appreciated.
  • My maps never take longer than around an hour now, but I have a 50 Meg pipe (actually it was only 20 Megs when I downloaded 2015.40).

Is anything appearing to happen? You should see some progress on the progress bar. If not I'd disconnect then try again.

Be aware that some PCs shut down, or switch off USB ports, so that may have happened. You say you've installed a sd card, did Express suggest a card? If not I'd remove it. Only install it when/if Express asks for it.

I have just loaded maps for the whole North America (you did not say what area you were loading) into my new Garmin Montana and it was a little less than three Gigabytes for the whole thing. Yes, it took about five or six hours, and I have a pretty slick connection; business cable modem and Ethernet to the computer. This setup normally loads megabytes pretty fast and this is gigabytes so it is a thousand times slower, and yes, it is hard to know what is going on there is no progress bar. I could see mine still loading by the flashing activity light on the Ethernet socket. Your setup may be different and therefore may well be slower... To increase the loading speed to maximum I stopped my Carbonite because it was attempting to search the whole computer for backup files, and I stopped my Skype in case anybody was to try to call. Do what you can and turn off all other things on yours that may interfere or do anything at all. Peter

Not a lot "appearing to happen" other than the procedure as described.....but i've followed each and every instruction. PC connection is fine. When i first looked at the unit without the SD card in it displayed the units memory as being 97% full. I checked with Garmin about size of card and they recommended 8gb which according to them is 'more than sufficient'. Express 'recognised' the card was installed and as the card itself is also brand new, i have no reason to suspect the card being faulty.

    Two Choices

You now have two choices, wait it out (Leave on overnight) do not close the laptop, if it is such, or you can just pull off the USB plug and restart your computer, reconnect the USB and start again. (I'd recommend the latter)
  • Me too. My full EU download took about an hour so I suspect something has stalled.

Well here is the latest (update!). It's just come up as "Update Completed".........but curiously also gives 4 more 'available updates', one of which is numaps Lifetime Europe EU.
  • So it's possibly just updating software at the moment.

No because each time it told me to disconnect the unit, then switch on, it installed. Then when i reconnected again it started downloading map updates. I went through that procedure at least 15 or 20 times.....but this is the first time i've seen "Update Completed" showing in Express. But as i said in that previous post, curiously it gives 4 more 'available updates', one of which is numaps Lifetime Europe EU.

So i don't really know what the hell it's been doing or exactly whats gone in! It's a pretty wacko idea of having to keep disconnecting and reconnecting all the time anyway. You have absolutely no idea of whats going on. It would make more sense to have a progress bar and then finalise all updates at the end of the entire process.
  • Well it's difficult to know exactly what's going on here. Again I've rarely been asked to disconnect then reconnect. Generally the only time that happens is for a software update.

Have a look in Settings, Map & Vehicles, myMaps to see what map is installed. If you can post a screen shot of what Express is showing that might help.
