310XT no longer syncing - "Re-authentication Required"

Been trying to upload some courses to my 310xt for the last few days and not had any success. It has worked before. Tried installing express again, master reset the watch etc etc and no joy. Now the watch will not upload my run from today - complains of "re-authentication required".

When I remove the watch from express then add it in again, the first time sync turns off the watch. Then when I turn it back on again and try another sync - I get the same error message.

I see alot of posts like this one about the latest express update. Where can I roll back to a previous version?

I got the same problem with my 310xt and added last runs manually. Please fix it.
  • I also have the same problem with my 310xt. This is starting to get "old". In the military, they have a word for this "SNAFU" that I think more than adequately applies here. If I had a dollar for each hour I have spent trying to get this to work, I could afford some other solution other than garmin. REI has a great comparison of features for all the GPS units they sell, I haven't had time to review it yet ... but hoping it has a better solution.
  • I have the exact same problem. Tried to reset my 310xt in case something was wrong that end, but no, with just one run in the 310xt it connects to Garmin Express, starts syncing but stops halfway and ask for re-authentication. Please fix this issue soonest.
My Vivofit syncs fine without problems, but none of the two 310xt's in the household can sync without the re-authentication issue.
  • The Re authentication issue occurs when there are files that Express cannot upload to Connect. These files remain in the folder below and inhibit future syncing. The current work around is to navigate to the sync folder on your computer and delete it. Remove and re-add the device afterwards and you should not get that error message again.

Type the following into your run box: C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\
Open your unit ID folder then delete the sync folder.

You might try this - I have a 910XT, but was having same issue with my workouts not getting transferred from Garmin Express to Garmin Connect. In fact, had difficulties then getting the Ant stick to work. All this happened about March 21st for me. Here is what I finally did, and it worked - While I had updated Express to the latest version, I decided to completely uninstall that program from my computer. I then downloaded the latest version (released a couple of days ago), and installed a fresh Express. Once I did that, I added my 910XT, I noticed that the Ant Stick was now recognized, and everything working perfectly now, both the auto upload from watch to computer, and then from computer to Connect. But what a pain. The key for me - doing a full uninstall of Garmin Express, downloading the latest version again, then re-installing it.

I was having this issue this morning, i.e. sync reaching half way then crashing and asking for re-authentication but nothing was uploaded to connect. I think the original cause was that the watch switched off for some reason during the sync (I have a 310XT).

I followed the guidelines above from Curt, i.e. deleting the sync folder (however I didn't bother with removing and re-adding the device on Garmin Express, instead I just enable the transfer all activities on the watch again). The cycle then synced fine and I can now view my activity.

Thanks for the simple instruction and easy workaround!

Same issue here. Removed the sync folder, deleted the device, re-added - same problem. Workout was/is in history on device. manually added to activities on Garmin Connect. I also continually get, "Software Update Available" on my Garmin Express app. It is up todate but the app doesn't recognise it. I have had my 310XT since Christmas. Love the device but, so far, not too impressed with the software functionality and reliability.

    Express not uploading to connect

    Hi

I have my forerunner 610 which has new activities on. Uploading fine when i used it on Sunday. Since yesterday its stopped. Same for my Edge 500 but thats not much of a concern as i can upload via USB on that one.

It does the transferring data display on the watch and then nothing. Express (version 4.15) eventually pops up saying i need to sign in to connect as authentication has failed. I sign in again and then still nothing.

It looks like you might be having the re-authentication issue. Try the following:
Type the following into your run box: C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\
Open your unit ID folder then delete the sync folder.

Even though you have a 610 your issue is belongs in this forum post. The latest version of Garmin Express is 4.0.19 so please make sure you update to the latest version first. See the FAQ: How do I update Garmin Express?

If you are getting the reauthentication required message, there is a corrupt activity on your computer. The file will be stored in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\[Unit ID]\Sync\FIT_TYPE_4.

The ProgramData folder is hidden. To access this folder:

    • Press the Windows Key + R
    • Type %programdata%
    • Click OK

Once you find the FIT_TYPE_4 folder, you can try renaming the files so that they end in '.fit' and uploading them manually using Modern Connect (From the Activities page, click Import). If any of the files fail to upload, they are corrupt and will need to be removed.

Once you have finished uploading any files manually, go ahead and delete the entire Sync folder. If you are missing any activities, you can try resending all of the activities on the watch but if you get the Reauthentication Required message again, the file is corrupt on the watch and you will need to delete the sync folder again. See the FAQ: How can I resend my history from my wireless watch to my computer?
