Problem updating nuvi

I have a seldom used nuvi 1450LMT. I love this GPS. I last updated the maps without issue in October, 2014. Since I am planning a trip to Baltimore in June, I decided to check for an update. I was directed to Garmin Express, so I downloaded and installed it on my Windows 7, 64 bit PC. The installation of GE went OK, but I spent a day and a half trying to do a map update. The connection speed would drop to as low as about 50Kbps and stall. Estimated time of completion for the download would vary wildly from 45 minutes to over 33 hours! After 2 or 3 hours of this nonsense, the download would ultimately crash. I tried disabling my firewall, my antivirus, running a malware check, everything that I could think of. I could stream Netflix and browse other websites while all this was going on, so I know that my internet connection was not at fault.

When I started to search for resolutions to this problem, I found a virtual mother lode of people having the same or similar issues with GE. Finally, I found a post that linked to Garmin Map Updater v3.3.4, and I installed that. My download completed in about 2 hours. I uninstalled GE.

I rarely have issues that many other people seem to have with various pieces of software, websites, etc. But, GE was a nightmare that sucked a day and a half out of my life that could have been used elsewhere. I understand that situations are different and some bugs will show up in new software, but, for the most part, things need to work when they are offered for public consumption. Life is too short for the kind of frustration that GE offers.
  • I have a 1490 which has updated without issue using GE for years, though something clearly went wrong with your update. However since you seem to have resolved it and aren't actually raising a query I'm closing this thread.
