Consistent failure of GE with FR305

When Garmin ended support for Communicator in Chrome (for Connect), I switched to Connect modern and GE. What a mess! After installing GE and setting up my device (fine) I can sync - also fine. But I can only sync *once*. Then no matter what I do, I get a GE error about needing to close and to call Garmin support. BUT...if I uninstall GE and reinstall it, add my FR305, guess what? Perfect sync. Once. The whole thing is very weird. I did the reinstall/synch yesterday and then, today, got the GE error again. Diagnostic #1 - Connect does not see my FR 305 as connected - neither does GE (but is surely is - how do I know? Garmin Training Center is able to download my run today!). Diagnostic #2 - Using IE and Communicator in Connect classic, everything totally works.

One working approach for syncing rather than multiple legacy, partially working approaches. Please.

Happy to send logs, etc. if of potential use.

I am sorry for the troubles. Your description sounds like Garmin Express is clashing with another application that monitors the USB ports for devices that are sporadically connected. If you have Training Center and it opens automatically when you connect the Forerunner then it may be conflicting with Garmin Express. There is a small program called Garmin gStart. It is quite old and it monitors the USB ports for older Garmin mode fitness devices like the 305 to be connected. Please use the instructions below to disable gStart from starting up with the computer and see if the behavior continues.

Once gStart is disabled, Training Center will not start automatically when connecting the GPS, but Training Center can be started manually.

Follow the instructions below to disable gStart:

1.Right-click on the gStart icon that looks like a small, dark blue 'g' in a light blue circle in the lower right of the computer's screen, near the clock.
    2.Select Exit
3.Uncheck the box next to Automatically start gStart the next time you log in
    4.Click OK

This will prevent gStart from opening the next time the computer is restarted.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

  • Curt...

Thanks for the reply. Your suggestion for disabling gStart is a good one - but I've already done that! So, GTC does not start on device connect. Do you have another suggestion? I can tell you that when GE gives me this error, without touching the FR305 connected by USB to the computer, I can download into Connect using IE and (presumably) Communicator.

    Thanks...Todd

Because that did not solve the issue there must be something else causing this problem. Please call our customer support team for further troubleshooting.
