Problems syncing to Garmin Edge 1000

My Garmin Connect repeatedly fails to send courses via Garmin Express to my Edge 1000.
I create a course on my laptop, save it and try to send it to the device, and about 95% of the time am greeted by "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect". Am I missing something simple, or is this simply incredibly flakey software?

Why are you using Garmin Express to download courses from Garmin Connect ? You should simply save the Course directly to the Edge 1000 by putting the FIT file (or GPX) into the \Garmin\NewFiles folder

Ah ha, I didn't realise I could avoid using Garmin Express... That's potentially very good news!
How do I get the course from Garmin Connect? I believe it is stored online, and I don't know how to download it in order to put into the \Garmin\NewFiles folder that you suggest
