610 won't sync after Garmin Express Update

After updating to the latest version of Garmin Express (4.0.15), my 610 would attempt to sync but halfway stops with the message 'Re-authentication required'. Even after authenticating myself the sync would not complete (just like some others have noted). Restarted the watch and the computer and verified I have the latest GE version.

From there, I uninstalled Express, uninstalled any older Garmin plugins, deleted all Garmin folders (including c:/programdata/garmin), reinstalled express, and setup device again (as suggested here on the forum). This cleared the re-authentication errors and I eventually managed to transfer data from my watch.

However, now Garmin Express again fails to transfer data although GE tells me that it has synced. I have again deleted the 'Sync' folder but it makes no difference. There are several activities on my watch that are refusing to upload. This issue only came up after updated Garmin Express. Previously everything was working perfectly.

I am running Windows 7.

Does anyone have any ideas?
  • I have tsimilar problem as of today after the update. It didnt sync anymore and after reinstalling it cannot find my ANT+ anymore
  • Further update, I have since done a hard reset of the watch (following the directions to do so exactly) with no change in the situation.

I have a couple of thoughts on this:

    1) Are you kidding me, Garmin? A hard reset that wipes everything? And this is the solution so frequently? What if the solution to every computer or phone problem was to erase everything. EVERY. TIME. Wouldn't you be livid? Not cool, Garmin. Not cool.

    2) Why, suddenly, would my watch be the problem. A few days ago, before the software update, everything was working fine. Now it's not.

    3) All relevant software is up to date fully, including firmware on the watch.

I've been a Garmin user for a long time. And when the products work, they work great. But the problem is, the frequency with which they don't work great is much too high. I work hard to defend the Garmin brand when my friends and training partners give me a hard time. However, that is becoming harder and harder to do.

Help me out here, Garmin. Please.

Have you tried to Force Send the history from the Forerunner 610 to Connect? The instructions to do so are in our FAQ How can I resend my history from my wireless watch to my computer?

If that doesn't work, see if the files have been saved to the computer. If the files have been saved to the computer, you can manually import them into Connect only you would navigate to the file location on the computer and not the device. Before importing, you will need to add a .fit extension to the files. These two FAQs will assist you with this:

Where do my activities go on the computer before they are uploaded to Garmin Connect?

How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?

If the files fail to import, they may be corrupted. There are multiple posts in other parts of the Garmin Forum on how to fix a corrupted .fit file.

The device may need to be master reset to clear off corrupted data.

Or you can contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

Any solution for this sync problem with garmin 610? my watch doesn't connect any more, I try to reset it, delete all drives, folders and .exe with garmin named on my PC (windows 7 64), try to use the ant agent, turn to old gc dashboard, and nothing work!! I lost my workout and Im about to changing to another watch (suunto), 'cause I from Brazil and I can't find any one to answer my questions.

When you say that the watch doesn't connect anymore, do you mean that Garmin Express is not detecting it? What about the ANT Stick, is that detected? What exactly happened when you ran ANT Agent? Was the Forerunner 610 detected? Was there an error, if so, what was the error? Is the Forerunner 610 in Power Save mode?

Try the troubleshooting in our FAQ What troubleshooting options can I try when my ANT enabled fitness device will not upload data?

If the device still fails to transfer data, you can try the Garmin Brazil website, http://www.garmin.com/br/support/. Or you can call the US 800 number for Product Support and request to speak to the Spanish Team.
