Garmin Express will not install (device driver software not successfully installed)

I just got my Garmin Forerunner 220. I like the watch but am having the hardest time with the add-on software.

I cannot install Garmin Express. I keep getting an error that the device driver software was not successfully installed (on the USB port). I have tried several different USB ports with the same result.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

  • What kind of computer, OS, etc?

Assuming you're in windows, does the device show in device manager even with a yellow exclamation mark?

If you can find it, delete it altogether and try again.

The Forerunner 220 is a mass-storage device when connected to the computer. The device actually uses Microsoft Windows drivers to identify and communicate with the computer. Your message states that you have tried different ports. Is this a desktop computer or a laptop computer? There is a section in our FAQ Why is my Garmin mass storage or MTP device not communicating with Garmin Windows applications? that deals with how to connect the device to a computer. Try the troubleshooting there, even try a different computer. If the device does the same thing on a different computer, the cradle cable could be defective. It is rare for a cable to be bad out of the box but it does happen.

If that troubleshooting doesn't resolve the issue, or for further assistance, contact Product Support by phone.

I am using Windows 7 and it is a laptop. I have unistalled it and tried to reinstall without any luck. I get the same error -- it just doesn't see it.

I'll try troubleshooting with the FAQ you referenced and I'll try it on my wife's laptop (Windows 8). I'll update this thread after that.

    Thanks.
