Garmin 3460 unable to install the updates.

I have 2 Garmin's both with an extra 32GB card. The US only one updated easily. The other 3490 which has the Europe maps on the SD is not updating the US maps that are inside the unit.

I get a message

"We're unable to install the updates."

The latest version of these maps have so much new information that we're not going to be able to fit it all on the device's internal memory.

There is no prompt to install it on the external memory.

File size 6.09GB

Garmin 3490 memory 65% full, 2.72GB free

Isn't the update suppose to delete the old maps and install the new ones?

How to fix this problem, using latest Garmin Express sw.

First remove the card. Then run Express. If it prompts for a card add the card at that point.

I've tried that as well and still nothing. In the beginning it would download and fail on installation. Now it just fails before it downloads.

I liked the older Garmin Express better.

Still having the same problem.

Express will delete the old map. However, depending on space, the new map might still be unable to fit even after the deletion of the old map which can cause this error. Is it prompting to use the SD card at all? If so, you can just send the map to the card at that point.
