Garmin Express wont start and core-service is missing

Ok, the full story.
I have a HP laptop with windows 7 64-bit installed. I am an Administrator on it.
I always log in as the Administrator and installs and run apps as the Administrator.
Now I have a problem that smells as a permission issue but can´t find out how to get
around it. I can´t be the only one so I hope you guys have worked something out.

Last spring I owned a Zumo 660 and had no issues with the installed 3.2.27 version
of the GE. I sold it and did not own a GPS until I bought the 590LM last October.
Connecting my new GPS to the laptop, GE started automaticly but did not succeed to
open when an error message came up. Don´t remember what it said now but I spotted it
to the "Garmin Core Service". This seemed to have stopped working as it was stopped.
It was for sure working 6 month before. I have Windows Update enabled for updates so
a lot have happen in that 6 months with the laptops Windows OS. I guess that is the
issue. Something have changed from april to october in the Windows OS that messes
GE up. The solution then was to change the user on the service to "Networkservice",
no passwords. Service came up and GE started again. I worked in it and updated the
new GPS with the latest maps.

Today I started GE again and connected my GPS wanted to do 2 things. Update the firmware
to 3.10 and transfer my maps to Basecamp. Update started as soon as I plugged it in
and GE found it.
Almost immediately the download of the updates seemes to hang. I just let it be hoping
it would start again but finally GE crashes. Hmm...I did remember I had this issue in
October so I didn´t want to take a chance with GE messing the firmware up so I went over
to MyGarmin website and updated the firmware successfully there.

Back to the GE on my laptop wanted to do the second thing, transferring maps to Basecamp.
I had seen there was an update 4.0.13.0 out so I downloaded it, uninstalled 3.2.27
and installed 4.0.13. Install finished with "Start Garmin Express", yes of course.
But nothing happens. Ok I thought, maybe same issue as last October. Looking at the services
the only Garmin service running is "Garmin Device Interaction Service", it says started.
But where is the core-service?
Pushed restart on the Device-service and this ends with #1053 error, timeout error, came
very quick after only a couple of seconds. So one service is missing and the other wont start.
Changed to run it as "NetworkService" and it starts up. GE would not start though.
Unistalled and installed GE a number of times in different ways from different locations
on the laptop but the 2 issues remains, GE wont start and Core-service is missing.

So, have you guys found out a workaround?

The core service has changed to the Garmin Device Interaction Service with the updated version of Express. Starting it as Network Service will make Express throw an error upon startup so should not be done. I would suggest contacting support so we can provide detailed troubleshooting steps with what we find in the event viewer/log files since your update didn't correct the problem.

  • Hi,
    I have the same problem.
"Garmin device interaction service failed to start".
It started just after I updated my version to V.4.0.13.0.
    Before all worked well.
I tried to perform a lot of actions related to permissions without success, went through a lot of forums and tried many things.
    Can anyone help here?

    Thanks SUSSAMB.
I just don't understand why there is a known issue in the Garmin express and I need to wait for 3 days now even if they helped other users solving the same problem.
Why won't they publish the solution in the FAQ ?

  • I suspect the reason Albert gave that advice is that it is rare and machine specific so that there isn't a simple solution. Product Support will be able to look at your specific problem and access your PC remotely if necessary.
  • Hi all,
    Thanks for the prompt replies.
I just managed to install and run the Garmin express software after many attempts.
I uninstall the version 4.0.3 that refused to run, after that I erased every Garmin folder and trace that I could found on my computer.
Then, I installed .net 4.5 again(It asked me if I want to repair and I chose yes).
After that I run a fresh installation of Garmin express and it worked!!!.
    I am so happy.

Hi, ok, I was looking all over yesterday for any known fixes but couldn´t find any.
I did try Everything related I found but had no success.
I did send a mail to my regional support about this last night too.

Just counted the updates in windows update from april to october, 48 of them. Thats just sick.

Zeev, glad it worked out for you. I will try this in the weekend to. :-)
