OEM Maps gone after Express Update?

Like an idiot and against my better judgement, but I foolishly let Garmin Express do a map update. But it keeps crashing and each and every time I get an error message telling me that it has failed and to try again. Despite several more attempts and each time taking around 2 1/4 hours to conduct, (???) its still crashes. So needless to say that I have given up!

I have even uninstalled Garmin Express twice to see if that would make a difference, but sadly not :-(

However, I have just switched the unit on and not only have some of the setting now been altered (?) which is a minor niggle to be fair, BUT....all the OEM cycle maps apart from the basemap have gone???

During the map update process, the pre-loaded or current mapping is deleted freeing up space for the new mapping. It sounds like Garmin Express failed during the installation process which is why the cycle maps were removed. In order to re-load them, you will need to install Garmin Express and complete a successful map update. Refer to our FAQ What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client? and if the failure persists, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

  • Hi Lisa,

Firstly many thanks for the very quick response, most appreciated. As I said in my first post, Garmin Express on my PC is the most current version available and as such no updates are required. This is confirmed when checking for current updates at the top right of the menu.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled Garmin Express three times now and each time tried to run the map updates and every time it crashes and I get the error message? Its not like its quick update process either, its always in excess of two hours each and every time, which is so time wasteful!

However, needless to say that I have just e-mailed Garmin Support UK, so hopefully someone will respond before the Easter break as I was intending to use it then!

    Regards

    Alan
  • I am just in the process of doing it all over again, and the message that has just popped up is that it will take 5 hours and 12 minutes to update!

The cycling map is about 6.67 GB in size. Since the mapping was completely gone, the files removed when Garmin Express was uninstalled, it needs to download everything from the beginning. It could take that long on certain internet connections. Our FAQ What should I do if I am having problems downloading updates in Garmin Express? provides information on what to check to ensure a successful download.

  • Well after four more attempts its finally conducted to conclusion the map update and reinstalled all of the maps.....phew! So thats in the region of eight or nine attempts, with each attempt taking in excess of a couple of hours, so at the very least thats probably in the excess of 20 hours of my life that I will never see again:(

Now here is my next question, I have not done anything any different, I have not altered any setting on my PC nor have I updated Garmin Express as it was already the latest version. So why has it finally decided to work? My conclusion is that not only is it seemingly and frustratingly a temperamental piece of software....... its incredibly annoying!!!

Serves me right for allowing Garmin Express conduct a map update I guess, but rest assured I wont be so quick in letting it happen again !
  • Probably the size of the file and limitations with your ISP etc. Glad you got it working though.

I've never had frustrations downloading maps with Express and I've been using it consistently since it was released.
