Express v4.0 failings

I have used Express several times to update my 2545, and tried to keep up with updates, but it still behaves like immature software:

When trying to update to EU 2015.40 for Computer and Device...

1. Seemed to be downloading ok, with a time remaining of 1h 12m ... for over two hours. Why are the times not more realistic?

2. After about 2h 30m it gave a cryptic message 'There was an error installing the update'. No other clues at all. Why do the error messages give no real information whatsoever?

3. Tried same download again - same error after a few moments. But still seemed to be something being downloaded!

4. Stopped and started Express, then tried again, which seemed to re-start downloading. Time remaining this time started at 24 hours!! but decreased to 4h 30m pretty rapidly. But then failed with same error.

5. Decided to check Express version, and saw v4.0.11.0 should be available. Why did Express not tell me this when it was started?

6. Ran 'Check for updates' which started downloading something ... then it disappeared!

7. Tried 'Check for updates' again ... again it downloaded then disappeared ... but this time I noticed a brief red 'Failed' message. Why is error message not persistant and not helpful?

8. Tried 'Check for updates' again ... and this time it updated to 4.0.11.0 ok.

9. Tried to update map again ... ran for about 10 minutes (claiming 2 hours remaining), then failed again as it did at first.

10. So, after downloading over 5GB today (50% of my MONTHLY allowance!), I am no further forwards.

What can I try next - when I feel brave enough again?

Just noticed that something is still being downloaded at a steady 4 Mbps.
Sigh. Will see if a re-boot stops it. And it has. Phew.

I am sorry for the troubles. There was an issue with installing the EU map to the computer in Express v4.0.8 that was corrected by 3/20. Express 4.0.11 will successfully download and install City Navigator NT Europe 2015.40 maps to the device and computer. Please be sure to use a compatible Internet connection when downloading the 6 gigabytes of map data. A Cable or DSL internet connection is required as part of the Minimum Requirements:

    • High speed Internet access (Not for use with dial-up, mobile or satellite connections)

I bring this up only because these types of internet connections do not usually have an allowance that you refer to.

I ran several test units on Friday and was able to download and install the maps in each available configuration so this issue has been resolved. You may want to delete the device from Express, restart the computer then add the device again. The data you have already downloaded will remain unless you uninstall Express.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for your reply. Today I felt brave and tried the download again, and it must have continued from the previous failure ... but after an hour or so it failed again. However, after a restart it seems that the GPS device has been updated with 2015.40, but the computer has not. It now offers the option of Installing to Computer ... but when I select that it says it will download and install the map, plus Basecamp and MapInstall.

I already have the latest Basecamp, and do not want MapInstall. How do I just download the map to the computer?

I would hesitate to describe my Internet connection as 'High Speed', but it is ADSL (and not dial-up, mobile or satellite), and is normally very consistent and reliable. I do have a download limit of 10GB per month - which normally is perfectly adequate.
  • Unfortunately the install options cannot be modified. If you do no want MapInstall installed on the computer you can uninstall it once the process completes. MapInstall is only about 22mb in size. Since you already have BaseCamp it should skip that install.

  • It seems a very silly design to force users who have originally requested just a map download to have to install MapInstall ... and then uninstall it! You may regard the size as only 22MB, but for some users that is still large! And totally unnecessary.

Please can there be tick-boxes so a user can select whether to download BaseCamp and MapInstall?

    Thanks
  • Note that if you have Basecamp you have MapInstall on your PC already, it's part of the BC package. And since Express won't download BC to your PC as BC is already installed nothing will change for you :)
