Garmin Express can't sync again

Former Member
Former Member
I am Fenix2 User. The only way to connect my running data to Garmin connect is via Garmin express in my PC.

the whole day seen like not able to sync the data again.

Anyone facing that problem today ?

the sync now circle keeping turning round and round and can not complete the sync.
  • Curt, having the exact same issue with my 310xt with that software version. Same type of discrepancy in dates on the sync. There is a whole thread on this "garmin express won't upload to connect". Have followed all of the trouble shooting suggestions with no luck. At least my workouts are still sitting on the device and will stay there until they fix the software. I think it's the 4.50 version. That is when i started having issues.

SW version 4.50 was released in 2012 to correct an issue with the device creating a bad GarminDevice.xml file which is vital when communicating with other Garmin applications, including Connect. Part of the fix was to Master Reset the 310XT before the issue is truly corrected. So those that have installed the 4.50 but not Master Reset the device have not completely corrected the possible communication issues. This however does not explain some of the sync issues. Please see the thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?222122-Garmin-Express-sync-working-but-activities-not-uploading-to-Garmin-Connect&p=548216#post548216 for a possible suggestion on correcting the current issue. Once all the activities are uploaded to Connect, delete the device from Express and Connect then Master Reset the 310XT before it is added back to Express.

It's too bad that wonky software is knocking this product to the ground, but mine can't sync, despite repeated tries. Without it, this thing is worthless. Does anyone have suggestions on another product that actually works?

    Hi Curt,

Hi Curt, I installed 4.5 on 3/21, got one upload to connect and then it stopped working. prior to this, i had no problems syncing except for the occasional corrupt file. There are 2 topics in this forum discussing the problem of syncing but not updating in garmin connect. The problem was first reported on 3/15/15. It sure seems like there is something wrong with the software. Is it possible that something was modified in 4.5 in the past couple of weeks that contains a bug so that anyone who updated during this period of time is having issues? It just sure seems like too many people are having the exact same issue for it to individual computer problems. Thanks for your efforts.

Hi. After having read several threads, it seems to me that there are currently serious and global problems in synchronizing data. Therefore, I would appreciate if somebody from the company's side would really pay attention to this and then inform all of us - the paying customers - which measures the company has taken in order to fix the problem. Here's my problem with the Express:

    Windows 8.1 , Firefox is up-to-date (36.0.4)
Garmin Express Version 3.2.27.0 , Garmin Connect Version 15.1.1.0
Garmin Forerunner 620, the Express says "Your device software is up to date. Version 3.20"
I use USB cable to connect from my Forerunner 620 to PC
In Connect I have currently data from 35 Activities (All automatically synced from the watch, and I haven't yet deleted anything manually from the watch. Duration of Activities vary from 30 min to 90 min)

Last successful sync in Express 19th March 2015. Since then no luck. And increasing frustration.

Earlier the Express software started and synchronized automatically when I connected the device via USB, but now Express doesn't start automatically even though in Settings there is still a tick for "Automatically launch Express when a Garmin device is connected". (But in the big picture this is a minor problem, I wouldn't mind one extra click if I just got my data from the watch to the Connect).

After I have launched Express from the desktop, Express finds the device and shows "Connected".
I click the orange "Sync Now" button, but then it seems that somebody has invented a true "perpetual motion machine" because those small dots start going around and around and around... I have tried several times on several days. One day I started the process in the morning, left it on for the day, and by late evening it hadn't finished. Unlike for some other Garmin users, no error message has ever popped up for me, so it's just the eternal sync process.

IF there is a guaranteed fix to this on my end, I'm happy to receive the step-by-step instructions. However, because most likely the solution to this problem is beyond my hands, please don't bother to suggest some general "cross your fingers and try this" possible solutions (e.g. uninstall + reinstall, enter the data manually to Connect, etc.).

Looking forward to getting the sync problem fixed.

I am sorry for the troubles. Your version of Express is quite out of date. Please update Express to the latest version then try and sync your activities. If you continue to have troubles, remove the device from Express and Connect then add it back again. This will reestablish your credentials with Garmin Connect. If you continue to have troubles, manually upload the activity saved after March 15th. It is possible the activity has some corrupt data in it. If the manual upload fails then you know there is an issue with the file. Once you have all your activities uploaded to Connect, via the sync or manual upload, create a new 30 second test activity and see if that will sync.

The most common cause of Garmin Server errors are corrupt data coming from the device and incorrect Time,Date, and TimeZone settings on the computer. Make sure the Time,Date, and TimeZone settings are correct for your current location. Since the activity files are stored locally on the Forerunner 620 they can be moved to the computers Desktop if they will not upload. They are located in the Activity folder. Sort them by Date Created to determine which files to manually upload.

How do I update Garmin Express?

How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?

Updating Express, removing the corrupt data from the device along with reestablishing your credentials with Connect will hopefully resolve your sync issue.

The firmware for 4.50 has not been modified since 2012 when it was released. Users who did not do the Master Reset after the firmware update could operate like normal for any amount of time but the Master Reset will eventually need to be performed. Most of the sync issues have individual causes, that is why there is no sweeping fix for everybody. It can be related to their version of Express, the network, the computer, the amount of History on the watch, the operation of the watch etc... Each issues has a tendency to be unique as each user and environment is unique. The best suggestion for correcting a sync error which is only described in a paragraph is to update Express, Add/Remove the device from Connect, and Master Reset. If a more detailed information is needed or if it is imperative that the activities try to be salvaged from the device then contacting Garmin Support by phone is the best option.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

  • The firmware isn't the problem. It seems to be the most updated version of Garmin Express. Once i went back and installed 3.2.27.0, it worked.
  • It's a problem with Garmin Express. I have tried uploading with the latest and WORST version of Garmin Express (4.0.13.0) many times, and data WITH GPS will not upload. Data WITHOUT GPS will upload just fine.

So I grabbed an older laptop with an older version of Garmin Express -- version 3.2.27.0. Data with and without GPS uploads just fine.

The problem sure looks like your latest update to Garmin Express. How about you people at Garmin acknowledge it and get busy fixing.

It really ticks me off that I deleted some perfectly good data because Garmin pushed out bad software....again.
  • Has anyone got this working yet???????
    Sync still not working!!!!!!!
No way for Garmin Express to start syncing........
