GarminExpress fails to install on Win7 Pro 64 bit

I can't seem to find this thread. I have a PC with win7 pro 64 bit. I can download GE but it won't install. You know, Failed try again! When I first got this new PC last summer, I installed GE and updated both my Nuvi's. I had some problem with the PC overheating and shutting down unexpectedly, so Asus had me "System Restore" back to Factory day 1. Did not solve that problem. Sent it for repair and when I received it back, did all the Windows updates and then tried reinstalling GE. It will not install. I did however install it on my daughters Asus with Win8 no problems. Updated both my Nuvi's also. So the problem is on Win7. I also was on the phone with Techies from Garmin for 2 hours with them taking remote control of my PC to no avail. So what gives?
  • If you spoke to Garmin tech support, then I'm sure they must have suggested installing GC as administrator. Has that been tried? If Connect still works on Windows XP, you could try to install it in compatibility mode.

To the best of my knowledge, if an attempt is made to install software which requires Administrator rights, Windows will ask for an Administrator password - and not continue without one.

I would be very hesitant to try installing an application in compatibility mode unless it REALLY needs it; and I do not think GE needs it.

@Rotorhead - have you made sure that all traces of your previous GE installation have been removed from your PC? I suggest removing it entirely - the application itself, services and registry. Reboot, and try a fresh installation.

I have tried that and nothing seems to work. I did install it on two other PC's that belong to my daughters, win8 and vista. They work, no problem and I have updated my units. That doesn't do me any good when I'm away. I still need this on my computer. This is very frustrating!

I to have problems getting GE to work on Win 7 Pro 64bit.
I tried 2 laptop with Win 7 Pro 64bit and both do not work.

On the one laptop I have a dual boot.
It also has Win 8 and on the boot GE works with no problems.

I also have 2 Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium on it and GE works OK there too.

There seems to be a problem with Win 7 Pro 64bit. PC's and Laptops.

I have tried every trick in the book to get it to work.

But just like the Mobile app for Android they have one problem after another.

Maybe they need to hire new programers over there.
Or start paying them the ones they have better.

And do more in house testing of versions before they give it to us.

The v4xxxx series is a joke.
  • Updated my Windows 7 Pro 64bit laptop without a hitch
  • Like a number of these problems it seems machine specific. I had an issue with a Garmin program once. Nothing to do with Garmin but incorrect video drivers installed by Toshiba.

Sorry to say but that has been check not one time but 3 or 4 times.

It has everything to do with Garmin Express.......

I have never had any problems with any software I have installed on my Win 7 Pro 64bit machines.

I am a retired IT person with over 25 years in the business.

As for your machine specific answer I have 2 different laptops one from Dell and one from Lenovo both running Win 7 Pro 64bit.

And the problem is on both with GE.

So much for incorrect video drivers.

But Garmin spends to much time looking for excuses rather than fixing the problems.
  • I wasn't saying your particular problem is down to incorrect video drivers, just pointing out that problems on some PCs can cause issues. Since Breezly updated his Win7 Pro PC "without a hitch" it's clearly possible to install Express onto Win7 Pro PCs.

As a way forward for you have you contacted Garmin Support by phone? They can remotely access your PCs and help.

Also are you running them over wifi? Try cabling directly to your router/modem to remove any wifi related issues. That has worked for others in the past.

You probably also have the same firewall/AV program on both. Check that they're not causing the problem.

It has nothing to do with wifi vs Cable or which virus program or firewall I am using.
I use the same virus program on all my laptops.
    Same Firewall on all laptops

The software is installed on the win7 Pro 64bit.

But it is stuck on the task bar.
    You can not open it.
You can click and click and it will not Max or even Min.
It just remain on the task bar.

I have check the screen resolution and it is correct.
If I boot to the win 8 version GE start with no problems at all.
Same screen resolution same virus program same firewall.
    Same laptop......

Would it not just be simpler for Garmin to admit they have a problem.

instead of try this or try that or maybe it is that or it could be this......................
