I have contacted Garmin Support on 17 Feb 2015 and followed up with a 2nd request, but hope someone here will have the answer for me.
Thanks, Paul

Below are the confirmation email replies from Garmin support including details of my problem:

Subject: Confirmation Email: Nuvi 1450 won't update maps, 2nd request for help
Date: Fri, 27 Feb 2015 22:21:12 -0600

Category Or Device: nuvi 1450
Problem Description: This is my 2nd request for help on this issue - see your confirmation of my original request below, I have waited for more than a week for a reply, but today I uninstalled Gamin Communicator and Express from my PC, logged into myGarmin and downloaded and installed both as per the on-line instructions. The same problem still exists, and if I check for available Map Updates from My Dashboard the updates are shown, but I am just prompted to download and install Garmin Express, which I have already done 3 times now. Your urgent attention and response would be appreciated.

Subject: Confirmation Email: Cannot update maps on Nuvi 1450 Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2015 22:51:38 -0600 From: Garmin To: Paul Price Confirmation of email submission. Country: Australia Category Or Device: nuvi 1450
Problem Description: Last map update was Oct 2013, since then I have updated my PC from Win XP to Win8. Today I tried to update the maps on my Nuvi 1450, and as instructed on the Garmin website I downloaded and installed Garmin Express and Garmin Communicator plugin. Express recognises the Nuvi 1450 but will not proceed past the "Device found" acknowledgement screen to allow map updates. Tried clicking on the "Add Device" button, but nothing happens. Only the "Ignore" button appears to be active? Uninstalled and reinstalled Garmin Express (rebooting PC between each step) but this didn't resolve the problem. I would be grateful for your advice on how to fix this.
  • Are you running the latest version of Express? Then try deleting your 1450 from Express and re-add it. Are you now able to update the maps?

Yes, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Express yesterday. When I run Express it scans for devices and finds my nuvi 1450, but then just seems to freeze - I can click on the "Ignore" button but that just sends me back to "Get Started" button. So I can't actually open Express to check for updates OR delete my 1450 from Express to re-add it. Any other ideas please?
    Many thanks, Paul

It sounds like something is blocking Express ability to connect with Garmin's Map Update Servers. I checked out the Nuvi 1450 and your myGarmin account and everything looks fine. There are no problems with the Lifetime Map Update subscription. Are you on a personal Cable or DSL internet connection? Try disabling any personal internet security, firewalls and or antivirus software then try again. What other hardware or software changes have you made going from XP to 8 that might block internet traffic?

Curt, thanks for your response. Today for the first time when I connected my Nuvi 1450 to my PC Garmin Express launched by itself - previously I have had to launch it from the systray or desktop icon. And Express is now recognizing the Nuvi 1450 - but it said I wasn't connected to internet. So I connected using my USB wireless broadband modem which is what I used with XP Pro to initially setup the Nuvi 1450 and download map updates. After checking for updates Express told me there was a map update available so I clicked on install. The message "downloading 1 item, 12 minutes remaining, safe to walk away, do not disconnect" was shown, but after 40 minutes or so nothing was happening. So your suggestion that Express is not connecting with Garmin's Map Update Servers appears correct. There was a link in another thread pointing to a URL to check if a PC could connect ok with Garmin's servers - I had tried it and it said I could!

I also tried your suggestion of disabling Windows Firewall and my AV software, but this made no difference - in any case if my firewall blocked a new app I think it would notify me and seek permission to allow the app. My USB wireless broadband modem service works fine with all my other on-line apps and reaches speeds of 3.0 Mbps +. I am not aware of any other changes to hardware/software that might be blocking my internet traffic - as I said the only app I am having problems with is Garmin Express.

So I am still stuck and would grateful for any further help/suggestions, many thanks, Paul.
  • Express is compatible with DSL and Cable/Fiber internet connections. Running wireless through a wireless router should be fine but if your internet connection is not piped into your residence by wire it would not be supported. Essentially no broadband cellular, microwave, or satellite internet connections. The downloads are enormous and handled by Akamai. These connections are completely different from all other common application downloads and can even be throttled or blocked by some ISP's. They work for almost all of our customers but there are always some exceptions which are beyond our control. Other than bypassing the wireless router and connecting directly to the Cable or DSL modem with an ethernet cable or using a completely separate ISP, there are no other steps we can suggest. You might consider contacting Product Support and having the Software Support department take a look at your setup.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

Thanks for that detailed explanation Curt. I am using a USB wireless broadband modem on Vodafone's Australian 3G mobile phone network and I had assumed that what worked ok just over a year ago with XP Pro and Express would work today with Win 8. I guess my updates will have to wait until I can upgrade my internet connection - disappointing but not the end of the world. I hope my current inability to update does not mean my future access to free LMT will expire - my last update was in Oct 2013.
    Cheers, Paul
  • Your Lifetime Subscription is good for the life of the device. It doesn't matter how long it is in between updates. You can always use a friend or family members computer/internet connection if needed.

  • Curt,

Off topic I know but could you explain then the detail in this page http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/legal/lmdisclaimer where it implies the useful life is deemed to have expired if no updates have been downloaded for 24 months? It's always confused me! Relevant text is:

A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more
