Stay away from Express in light of the 4.0 upgrade

Did a mountain bike ride this evening with my Forerunner 310XT. It has been working fine for the most part, but within the last week I was having a couple "Could not sync to Garmin Connect" type issues, but upon retrying the sync process, they would eventually upload.

It happened today, and now Express isn't finding anything to sync. The activity is there, in the device History. I see it. But it wouldn't sync it. I checked for Express updates and it turned out there was one. So I installed it, hoping that the update would fix the problem. No dice. I tried the method listed in another thread to remove the device and then pair it again. Nope. I am trying the Classic interface right now to see if it will upload my activity, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Express 4.0 is finally trying to sync now after an hour of squat, but it's still tossing out "there was an error syncing to Garmin Connect" messages after it tries to sync for awhile and fails for some unknown reason.

Is it really so hard to allow Windows to manually browse activities and pull them from the device? Or put that functionality in Express rather than relying on Express to find it and complete a sync to GC. I just want my activity off my device for crying out loud.
  • You can manually pull files using Connect if you want to.
  • You can manually pull files using Connect if you want to.

How? Connect wouldn't pull anything off mine.
  • Go into Activities and select Import ... more detail on Connect here

  • Right. So that lets me choose a file through Windows file navigator. In case you missed it, I am using a Forerunner 310XT. It connects to the computer via ANT+. I cannot browse the device that way.

So, I let it sit all night trying to transfer and I kept getting the same stupid errors from Express.

    @MTBIKERNATE

Like you say in starting post, stay away from version 4.0.

A lot of user have problem with this new version and hope that this version will be soon removed from server, becouse from time that first GE was released i didn't see so poor version like is this 4.0.
Don't know what Garmin think when release this version.
  • FINALLY got my ride synced over...but now Express won't stop trying to sync with my Forerunner. The device keeps beeping (I'm charging it up, so it's powered for now) and my computer keeps telling me my activities are syncing. Trainwreck.

I am sorry that you are having trouble with Garmin Express. I have not heard of any other reports of this behavior. If you are still getting the repetitive syncing prompt, I would recommend removing the device from Garmin Express, rebooting the computer and then pairing it again.

If you have never deleted History from the device once activities have uploaded to Connect you should consider it. I recommend not keeping more than 30 days worth on the device and syncing as often as you can, which it sounds like you do. Depending on how long you have had the watch and when the firmware update to 4.50 was done I also suggest you Master Reset the device sometime after you get all the data uploaded. The 4.50 firmware update contained a fix for an issue uploading data but a Master Reset was required for the fixes to take 100% effect. Some users skipped the Master Reset and still have troubles 3 years later.

    Hi
I am trying to upload a run from my Forerunner 205 to Garmin Connect; I use Garmin Express and it says software is up to date; It connects with my watch perfectly and says sync complete and when I click on the Garmin Connect button it brings me to the site but it says last sync was days ago and doesnt show any new activities. I have tried removing the device and reinstalling it; I have removed Express and reinstalled it; all to no avail. Can anyone help please? its very frustrating.
Incidentally my run uploaded to Runkeeper with no issues from the Garmin. It seems to be a fault between Express and Connect
