Garmin Express syncing time?

I'm trying to sync my Edge 800 to Express. I plugged the Edge into my laptop about 2 hours ago, started Express which recognised the device and syncing started - and it's still going on!
The Express page says that updates (timezone map) and Syncing are both "Done" but the green bars are still running and when I try to close Express I get a warning that doing so will have dire consequences.
Does it normally take this long?

    Syncing a Edge should only take a couple of minutes if everything is working correctly. There might be some corrupt data that Express will not upload. Use the steps in the FAQ's below to make sure Express is up to date then manually upload the activity files from the Edge to Connect. After manually uploading the activities to connect, delete any activity on the Edge older than 30 days to prevent future sync issues. Finally create a 30 second test ride then add the Edge to Express and sync it with your connect account.
