Intermittent failure to sync

I have a 410, but since the move to Garmin Express syncing is unreliable/intermittent. I have looked through as many suggestions on the forum to try and identify a solution. Some of these appear to be posts by Garmin support staff, some don't, not that it makes a difference, the intermittent syncing continues. I had never had a single problem syncing prior to Garmin Express.

I can try to sync a run, Express repeatedly fails and retries, before finally saying sync successful, see data in Connect etc, but it hasn't synced, the Data hasn't uploaded, and I cannot see it in Connect.

I have tried "force syncing" the missing runs, but Garmin Express, Garmin Connect and Garmin Classic (or whatever the old version is called) all say there are no activities to sync, yet they are still there on the watch.

One of the suggestions I've seen from Garmin is to not keep a lot of activities on the watch as that can cause data loss/corruption. Leaving aside the fact that if the memory becoming full can cause data corruptions it clearly isn't a very good product, I don't keep lots of activities on there as I don't want to be in a position where I go for a run and the memory fills up.

Garmin also suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Express. Been there, done that, still fails intermittently.

I've tried looking for the .fit files on my PC, but there are none to be found, anywhere, in any directory.

This morning I synced the runs I took while on holiday and all worked ok. This afternoon I tried to sync today's run - Express failed and auto-retried repeatedly, then finally said sync successful, click here etc, but it hadn't been successful, the run it not there.

From what I can see on many other threads on the forum, this only started, as it did with me, with the introduction of Garmin Express. If Garmin can't even accept and acknowledge that fact, how are they going to fix it?

I've tried contacting Garmin support before, when a software upgrade made my watch less accurate (it used to measure the same run at the same distance, every time but since the upgrade it measures it at variable distances, and always shorter). Their response? Buy a new watch! I'm starting to get so fed up now them I'm actually hoping my watch will stop working and I can buy a new one. TomTom, maybe? Polar? Piece of string on a reel? They'd all be more reliable!

If the files aren't on the computer, it means nothing ever got sent over to connect. This leads me to believe that the files might be corrupt. I would suggest calling into support so we can see if this is actually the case or not.

  • I contacted Support and their advice was to ensure GC was running on the right version. Although I have it set to auto update and had just clicked the Check for Update icon, the version on my PC was out of date. I uninstalled GC, downloaded the new version, installed it, rebooted my PC, paired my watch and new version of GC, rebooted my watch (held the two buttons until it rebooted), went for a run but surprise surprise, it failed to sync. That's the third out of the last five, including Sunday's Trail13 race, the hardest, toughest, longest race I have ever entered. Until I started using GC (no choice in the matter, the previous system, whatever it was called, stopped being available) I had never, ever, EVER, had a problem syncing, now it's more common for it to fail than be successful.

Is this software ever going to be fixed or should I buy a rival company's product?
