I have a Garmin nuvi 40LM and i updated the maps and software via Garmin Express ,it detected my sd card got the option to instal the new updates there , all went smoothly until i started the device again , i get the message " Cannot unlock maps ". Now i search the forums but i did not found the solution for my problem. There were some fixes on the forum but i have no details link under myMaps, if i hover my mouse over it i get the unit ID also i can see my serial number but thats about it no link and unlock code . Please help me , anyideas will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I am sorry for the troubles. I noticed your device is regional for Romania only which means that it is only unlocked for Romania. The map file for Romania is not very large so the use of a SD card should not be required. It sounds like Garmin Express installed a map containing more countries than Romania. These additional countries are generating the "Can't Unlock Maps" message. I suggest you remove the SD card and see if the message goes away. Use the FAQ below to reinstall only the Romanian map to the internal memory.

How do I reinstall maps or change coverage using Garmin Express?

If you continue to have troubles I suggest you contact Garmin Support in your region. Go to www.garmin.com and click the Support link in the upper right corner.

First of all thank you for the replay, it is very curious they skiped the fact that the device its only a regional one , i specifically mentioned to the salesman that i need a gps for Europe Countries as well, he told me that i will need to instal the europe map on an sd card ...anyway is there a chance to unlock additional countries? or should i go and try to get my money back because what i asked for and what i got are 2 diferent things ...

Thank you again for the suport , i will see if i can get in touch with Garmin Support in my region.
  • If you only have a device that has Romania and were promised Europe then yes, take it back and complain.

You can of course add other countries but at a cost.
