Garmin Express - fails to sync without a kick in the pants

Hi

on Win 7 my garmin express will not see my vivofit when I initiate a sync on the vivofit. However IF I
*open garmin express
*click the green refresh circular arrows
*then activate sync

it works

this is not mentioned in the documentation (which just says initiate sync on the band)

The USB dongle is plugged into a front USB port and its about 40cm from my vivofit. Even being at 1cm will do nothing without the above steps.

questions:
is this normal?
is perhaps the dongle faulty?
  • Isn't there a setting to open Express automatically when a device connects?

    sorry if I hadn't made clear that Express was running ... it appears in the icon bar at the lower right ... as I said, it just needs that manual kick in the pants to sync or it won't

    also (FWIW) in my GE settings all three lines are ticked (Always keep GE running,Automatically laucn GE when a device is connected, Automatically update GE ...
    Proxy is off
