Syncing courses on the 810

As a relative newbie, I managed to create a course on Garmin Express and send it to the device....no problem. That was a week ago.
Today, I tried creating a course from a ride I did today
* if I try from the 810 itself (create course from ride), the course shows on the 810 but when hitting Sync in Garmin Express it says "Sync complete", but the course never shows up in Garmin Connect,
* if I try from Garmin Connect (go to the Activity itself and press the little gear icon and select Save As course), the course is show in Garmin Connect, but when hitting Sync in Garmin Express it says Sync Complete, but the course does not show on the 810

Basically courses are not being synced either way :(

Am I missing something here ? I have tried creating a new 0.5 mile course on GC (which is what I did a week ago)....that does not show up either.

The only thing that has changed is I have updated the device from 3.20 to 3.40, and updated Garmin Express to the latest version (3.2.27.0)

Courses will not sync to Connect from the Edge through Express. You would use Express to sync an Activity from the Edge then save the Activity as a Course in Connect. This sounds like what you have been doing. To get the saved Course back to the Edge, you will need to take it one step further and click the Send to Device button. This will send a course file through Express back into the NewFiles folder on the Edge. When you disconnect the Edge it will process the file into a Course. Course files reside in the Courses folder on the Edge's internal memory.

To see what activities you have saved as Courses in Connect you can use the menu (three bars) then click Courses. You must go to the Details page for a Course in order to send it to a device.

  • Thanks Curt - that makes sense, and that does work - I successfully created a course from an existing activity, then sent it from Connect to my Edge. So are you saying that if you create a course on the Edge, you cannot sync it to Connect (i.e. you can only create a course with Connect and send TO the Edge) ?

If that is the case, then what this means is that you will have inconsistent courses on the Edge vs. Connect....which is well confusing. That seems rather crazy, seeing as you have the ability to sync both ways. My understanding correct ?
